The Shelby in Detroit stands out as one of the most interactive speakeasies I've ever encountered. The journey begins upon entering a building housing a steakhouse and coffee shop, followed by a descent down a staircase. This leads to a retro-style coffee shop exuding a charming 50s sock hop vibe, complete with teal and white accents, a coffee attendant, and a cashier. Approaching the cashier, we simply uttered, "We're here to meet Shelby," and were instantly met with a warm smile and instructions to proceed down a short hallway and open the door with a vault handle – a small knob resembling a vault – ensuring we closed it behind us. Stepping through the door revealed a captivating scene: a small bar, cozy lounge and table areas, and the pièce de résistance – a full-fledged bank vault where patrons can indulge in handcrafted cocktails. Each drink felt like a magical concoction, and the mixologists were incredibly knowledgeable, eager to assist us in discovering new favorites while engaging in delightful conversations. We also enjoyed a few small bites that were just as amazing as the drinks, perfectly complementing the unique atmosphere. The Shelby has rightfully earned its place among my top 10 speakeasies. It's an unforgettable experience that seamlessly blends history, mystery, exceptional cocktails, and delicious bites.

I was first introduced to shelby for a work event and immediately took note of the establishment as a place to which I’d like to return and bring my friend for his upcoming birthday. It has such a neat dynamic as a cocktail lounge - swanky, relaxed, decorative. I surprised my friend for 7:45p reservations on a Friday evening in July where we were immediately seated in a cozy corner adjacent to the bar, dramatically lit and layered with arches. Everyone on staff was so hospitable and attentive; friendly and caring. From the host team to the servers. Ravin, our specific server, took little moments to visit with us, despite a busy floor. She balanced caring for all of her tables, while still prioritizing connectivity. She made us feel special and seen; valued and appreciated. When she learned it was my friend’s birthday, the staff treated us to a complimentary champagne toast, adding such a sweet touch to the evening celebration. There is a two-hour limit for the table and it did feel a bit rushed suddenly in the departure, but that did not take away from the overall experience. It was a spectacular visit and we both had a wonderful time on such an extraordinary occasion – greatly thanks to the shelby staff! :0)

Okay so there are a lot of places claiming to be a Speak Easy these days, but most are very well advertised and easy to find which was not the case for speak easy's. Shelby really goes back to the original speak easy by having NO signage on the outside of the building, or on the inside for that matter. Even pulling up the details on the place did really stop us from questioning if we were at the right spot or not. Thankfully with a hesitant "is that the correct blue door" we were asked if we had a reservation and was taken in. Drinks were incredible, but as I had to drive a short distance to our dinner spot for the evening, I only had 2 in the 1.5 hours we were there. That's okay though, just gives us a reason to go back. We decided to have the French Onion dip so we weren't drinking on empty stomachs and it was very good, clearly fresh made and not something from a tub and dressed up. Out server was incredible, giving a nice detailed description of offerings not on the menu, but more like specials for the weekend. Be sure to check it out if visiting Detroit.

Nestled discreetly within the bustling streets of Detroit. The Shelby is a hidden gem that effortlessly transports you to the roaring 1920s, where whispers of jazz, the clinking of glasses, and the allure of secrecy reign supreme. From the moment you step through its unassuming entrance, a world of vintage charm and clandestine glamour unfolds before your eyes.

The ambiance at The Shelby is nothing short of mesmerizing. Dimly lit with a warm golden hue, the space exudes an air of mystery and intimacy, instantly whisking you away from the modern-day chaos. Every corner is adorned with elegant décor, from the plush leather seats to the artfully crafted woodwork, meticulously capturing the essence of a bygone era. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring, ensuring an immersive experience that immerses you in the spirit of the prohibition era.

The cocktails at The Shelby are a testament to the mixology craft. The talented bartenders behind the bar are true artisans, skillfully concocting a delightful array of libations that both honor tradition and push the boundaries of creativity. From classic favorites like the State Fair Old Fashioned and the Ace High to unique signature creations, each drink is a work of art, expertly balanced and garnished with precision. The quality of the spirits and the freshness of the ingredients shine through in every sip, tantalizing the taste buds and leaving a lasting impression.

The staff at The Shelby deserve special mention for their impeccable service. Friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, they effortlessly guide you through the extensive drink menu, offering recommendations tailored to your preferences. Their passion for mixology and commitment to delivering an exceptional experience is palpable, elevating your visit to new heights. Whether you're a seasoned connoisseur or a curious novice, they make you feel welcomed and appreciated, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and camaraderie.

While the focus of The Shelby is undoubtedly on the libations, the establishment also offers a selection of delectable small plates to complement your drinks. From artisanal cheese platters to exquisite charcuterie boards, the culinary offerings are carefully curated, ensuring a harmonious pairing with the beverages. The attention to detail extends to the food, with each dish boasting remarkable flavors and presentation, satisfying the senses and enhancing the overall experience.

The Shelby is more than just a bar; it's an enchanting escape into a bygone era. With its sophisticated ambiance, masterful cocktails, and impeccable service, it stands as a testament to the art of mixology and the allure of hidden establishments. Whether you're seeking an intimate evening with a loved one or a rendezvous with friends, The Shelby is an absolute must-visit for anyone yearning for an unforgettable journey...

Never again! The staff made our party feel extremely unwelcome. Staff Ruined our experience and mood. We did not have a reservation but so what!? so we tipped the hostess to let us in. Before we entered the hostess repeatedly explained to us that we did not have reservations so she’s doing us a huge favor and we only have 1 hour, only 1 hour, you must leave in 1 hour. We kindly agreed just to shut her up. Upon entering the place was empty! A little while later we were approached by the manager, we had a few friends who wanted to come in and sit with us, apparently this was prohibited. The manger was rude explaining how they don’t accommodate party’s. We explained that our friends can sit with us we will not take up any other seats or tables. our friends came in and the manager again came to explain to us how she’s doing us a huge favor by allowing our friends to come in. Then the hostess came back to rudely tell us how this is not ok and we only have an hour.. My friend finally had enough of this rude treatment and asked the manager and the hostess if they just want us to leave?! If you don’t want our money then we will just leave! The hostess and manager said No don’t leave and FINALLY left us alone!!!! we then got a waitress and ordered drinks. The drinks took forever to come. We didn’t appreciate the way we were treated. We all expected a great night out Downtown Detroit with friends and completely regret going there. Never again. Very Very bad experience! Very very bad customer service. I never in my life had staff make me feel unwanted...

We were super excited to try this place. We came here on Friday for a drink after having dinner at another place. Someone in our party went in before we parked to make sure they could accommodate us. It was 9pm and they said they had a table for us until 10:45 when they had another reservation. We were fine with that so we paid for parking and went inside. We were seated and placed a drink order with a server. A few minutes later the server informed us that the owner, Tarun Kajeepeta (who received us at the door) claimed that someone in our party was too intoxicated to be served. We just came from a large dinner none of us were anywhere near intoxicated. When we requested to speak to him, he came to the table and proceeded to embarrass our party as everyone around us could hear and see what was happening. We asked him what his concerns were as he runs a SPEAKEASY! He claimed that drinking & driving was his concern, even though my husband explained that he was our designated driver. So we got up and left. On our way out there was a large party waiting to be seated. We're pretty sure that the reservation had gotten there early and since we weren't ordering food, the greedy owner decided to make up an excuse to accommodate the other party while embarrassing us in front of the other patrons. The person who went in to get a table spoke to him directly. If she was too intoxicated, why did he seat is in the first place?? Don't waste your time coming here. I'm sure the drinks were great, but the owner...
