Scotty's is great. The rooms are small, not fancy, but comfortable and clean with everything you need. Coffee, fridge, microwave, etc.
What sets them apart is the service. They are EXTREMELY kind and thoughtful! We were traveling with a cat, and right when we arrived the manager came and put a sticky on our door saying, "cat inside." (He also brought us ice, unasked!) After having had to chase cats around because maids let them out, or ignored requests to NOT clean due to the cat present, etc., it was great to be treated with such awareness. Also, we've run into a lot of places that SAY they're pet friendly, but then announce they only mean dogs! As if cats aren't the #1 pet in this country! Cats don't sit and bark when left alone or when they hear a sound at night, or chew the furniture, or pee on the floor out of nervousness or having been left too long. I don't get it.
Also, I don't mind paying a deposit for my cat, in case there's damage, but mine are well-behaved,quiet, very much litter box trained, and I know I'll get that deposit back. I love dogs too, but I don't like the way so many places either won't even TAKE cats, or want to charge you $40 a night for them! ANY animal requires extra cleaning, and I don't mind paying a reasonable fee for that, but to act as if cats are somehow more trouble than dogs just irks me.
All leading up to the fact that it was lovely to have our cat so welcomed at Scotty's! The additional fee was quite reasonable, and overall their prices are VERY good.
You can walk to most places in town - especially to restaurants and the two breweries - and we felt fully safe leaving Finn in our room when we did the Pictured Rocks ferry, which is not to be missed. I'd like to go back to take the shipwreck tour, and when I do, I will DEFINITELY stay at Scotty's!
Even the maid made a point of introducing herself, and asking us if we needed anything. ALL the people we dealt with from Scotty's were so kind, welcoming, and friendly! I was with my sister and a friend in this trip, but I also really like to travel alone, and I would feel completely safe at Scotty's. (Not that Munising in general is a risky place, but as an older woman traveling, it's so nice to feel that added sense that folks are kind of looking out for you.)
I can't recommend them enough, really. I mean, if you like staying in fancy, higher-end, $350-a-night hotels, you should stay elsewhere, but if you want a reasonably-priced, comfy, quiet little room from which you can explore the town, and the absolutely kindest people around you, choose Scotty's! ESPECIALLY if...

It's Too good to be true. I typically read reviews and trust the reviews of others. I had to search out a new place to stay as the normal place was booked for the evening. When I saw that Scotty's Motel had a good review and that was clean and inexpensive, I thought it would be perfect. We just needed an overnight as we were getting back on the road early the next morning. I would have packed my family and had us stay somewhere else, but there was no where else.. for miles.
While unpacking our van with the things we needed for an overnight stay we were being watching and the oldest of the kids in our group was being stared down by older male guests. We felt uncomfortable with the ogling stares and reported the problem to the office. The clerk didn't see the harm in the starting and told us that we should "feel safe."
This place was absolutely filthy! I wouldn't even let my babies sit on a blanket on the floor. The bathroom had hairs (not ours) already in the shower and all over the floor. The edges of the shower door had dust, soap scrum, crud and hairs built up. The bathroom rug, was worn, ripped, and dirty with human hairs woven into it. The A/C unit in the window wasn't working properly. The fan was coated with dust and grime.
After reporting the conditions of the room to the clerk, however she didn't think our complaint was worthy of addressing. The next day I called to retrieve an item left behind. The clerk wasn't concerned about my item, but accused my children of vandalism.
This motel isn't worth a star. I wouldn't recommend this...
Read morethere are much better places to stay in Munising. Scotty's is old, tired, run down. It's for sale, and I think the owners are trying to squeeze as much out of the place before they shut it down. We arrived late on a Sunday night after a day on the road from Wawa, on, and a two hour boat trip on Lake Superior. No one in the office, a sign on the door saying that there would be no one in the office the next day, either, so check ourselves out. Room was large ish, and clean, but the bathroom was small. One bath towel (there were two of us), could not find an ice machine, drank my whiskey neat. I discovered later that there was wi fi but the note as to specifics was hard to find and we didn't see it until the next day when we left. There was a good breakfast restaurant a block away (dogpatch). I won't say it was a dump, but I will say that it is....grim. Better places to stay in town, three or four near Scotty's, much better value. I apologized to my traveling companion for booking the place, for that much money. It's also expensive: $138 (170 after taxes and add ons) for the night. My chump alarm went off when I saw the credit card bill. It would be worth maybe half that price, so be aware when you read about the friendly staff, bikes to ride into town and the new sauna. Not a good value for the money involved. I stayed here in room 5 on 14 Sept...
