Woah!!!! This was for sure one of the best, if not the best, date nights I have ever had!!!! It definitely blew my mind.
What a great class, what an awesome team, what a delicious table of refreshments, what a delicious variety of food, it was all above PERFECTION!!!!!
Me and my boyfriend had a blast at Self Up. We met really awesome people, and most importantly, we learned a few tips for cooking, ((although I had considered myself very very talented in the kitchen, not so much anymore. Lol)) and learned how to make pasta from scratch, also learned how mozzarella and tiramisu are made and tried making them as well, as we came for the “Italian Dinner with Tiramisu Finale”.
Danny, the Chef, was so incredible talented, super funny and soooo warm and welcoming. His vibe definitely lighted up the room and the way he teaches made learning super fun, and so interesting!!!! His team was so friendly and helpful as well, and so soooo fun!!! Shoot out to Chef Mark, who was so happy the whole night and helpful to me and my boyfriend, definitely another beautiful soul!!! They all made our experience so much better than we ever expected.
One would think, “why would I pay to cook when I can just go to a restaurant?”, let me tell you… it’s worth every single penny, you’ll end up mesmerized and in love with the whole process!!!!!! We now want to go take every class they offer and want to get ourselves a pasta machine so that we can put into action what Chef Danny thought us.
The food came out to be so exquisite, the Chef’s hands were gifted and made with the sazón for sure!!!
We LOVED the experience and we’ll definitely and surely be back for more classes!!!! The whole experience lasted about 3 hours and it was so joyful, incredibly exciting and so so unique!!! You can probably go take one of these classes at many places, but I can assure you, none of them will be like at Self Up. The ambiance of our huge group said it all, it was a room full of strangers and shyness all connected by the grace and excitement of the Chef and his team, who made us all come out of our...
Read moreI have to say, I was super excited heading into this dumpling class and expected it to be interactive and fun. It was a birthday gift for my girlfriend and we are huge dumpling fans (who isn't... right!?). Unfortunately for us it was a big disappointment. The kitchen and the space itself was great. The K-pop vibe was working as well, and the light apps and beverages were a very nice touch -- but sadly, that was the end of the positives. I was fully expecting that we were actually going to do some cooking during the class, and that is ultimately why I signed up. As it turned out... all that we did in the 3 hours we were there was assemble a couple of spring rolls, roll out some small scallion pancakes, shape a couple of dumplings, and scoop a few balls of cookie dough onto a baking sheet and that was it. We spent most of the time watching and listening to the instructor, Oliver, do the things I thought we would be doing as a group or... just waiting around. We did not mix any of the dumpling filling. We did not make or roll out any dumpling dough. And... we did not even cook any dumplings. To our dismay.
We also had to deal with huge distraction. You see, of couple of amateur social media "influencers" were in our small group. They were allowed to "produce" content which totally killed the vibe and slowed things down dramatically. At the same time, our instructor seemed to relish in the extra attention and played to the camera. It was sad to watch to be honest. Equally disappointing was the dumplings themselves, as they were bland and not memorable (except the pork option) which rounded off our blah experience overall. What a let down. 0 out of 10. Will NOT recommend. Shout out to Chef Dale!!! In only a few cameos, you made the group laugh without even trying. All the...
Read moreWe’ve done a few cooking classes together, but this was the first time every dish was made dairy-free just for my boyfriend. He’s never been that into italian food... until now :’)
We joined Selfup’s Italian Cooking Class to celebrate his birthday, and it was literally the first time I’ve heard him say he actually enjoyed a cooking class. He’s lactose intolerant, and they accommodated his dietary needs in every single course. Yes, even the tiramisu!
Big shoutout to Chef Danny, Chef Monica, and Chef Edgar. They were so knowledgeable and patient. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a fun, hands-on experience with thoughtful dietary accommodation.
What we made in 3 hours: *Hand-Stretched Mozzarella Cheese First time making mozzarella from scratch! It tasted so fresh and we could adjust the salt to our preference. We even had a mini competition to see who could stretch their cheese the highest.
*Handmade Fettuccine and Ravioli I was most excited to try the fancy pasta machine. We mixed and kneaded the dough from scratch, then rolled out the fettuccine and assembled ravioli with a vegan pesto-tofu filling. So satisfying to watch it all come together.
*Marsala Chicken The class kicked off with a live demo where we learned real culinary techniques, like how to properly cut and sear veggies and build flavor. My boyfriend even got to light the pan on fire (safely), which definitely made his night.
*Tiramisu I was actually amazed by how delicious and coffee-forward the tiramisu was! They substituted mascarpone with coconut-based whipped cream for him so we could both enjoy the dessert.
We could even pack up the leftovers at the end, so nothing...
