No microwaves in the room. That is the first zonk. They do this because they want you to eat at their on property restaurant... issue with that? They are "currently redoing their kitchen/replacing equipment" so they actually have no restaurant. They do not have a proper drinks menu with pricing (nor even a drinks list with set recipes from what I gathered) so the "on-site bar and restaurant" also a major Zonk... especially when I don't have a microwave outside of a single one for everybody in the hotel to use that is in the lobby to be able to make my own self something to eat in my room... two different times I visited the pool, no towels had been placed in their towel cabinet, so I had to come out to my own vehicle and get my own towel which thankfully I did have. None of the staff seem to be very enthusiastic about their jobs either, as I have gotten a very dry attitude "move them along" from literally every staff member here. To make it even better... I checked in here on a Monday evening and it is now a Thursday evening and they still have the same items in their dessert case that were in it on Monday, so save yourself the money and buy a pack of Chips Ahoy because I guarantee you none of their dessert items are going to be favorable either. To add insult even further, I wanted to purchase a soda earlier today...why didn't I? Because the soda cooler (which BTW they also keep their salads in...) was at 50ish degrees and not cold AT ALL. They also only have one functioning elevator so it's like waiting on Fred Flintstone to pick you up... you'd literally be quit taking the stairs if you are able-bodied. I'll put it this way, a wolf in sheep's clothing is an understatement for this hotel. Might look nice on the surface and in pictures, but realistically it is kind of crappy. It is also not on the favorable side of Charleston. Will I stay here again? Likely not. I will also second what Solo Brown said (below)... unless you want the same thing every day of your stay and by the way they only have solid dishes nothing take away for people that do stay here for work and need to get out the door... so yeah the only positive is that there is a Cracker Barrel and an IHOP right in front of the hotel in which you may have breakfast at that I am sure would be better than the hotel, and again as Solo Brown said there is a McDonald's across the street... I don't know how this place has 4.2 stars on Google because they definitely don't deserve it. New staff, BOTH elevators working and in a timely manner, and microwaves being added to every single room, and the staff being more attentive to the pool.... that might change my review. Definitely don't stay here if it is not for work or a group outing, because if you stay here for vacation, let's just say it's not going to be a very good vacation. I wonder if I hadn't been better of staying at a Quality Inn... Update I will give the credit where it is due, and say that on my FINAL morning here, the breakfast was actually better, so I have added a star to my overall review simply due to the Friday morning...
Read moreThis hotel looks great by reviews and pictures, but really consider the area before booking! I was booked at this hotel for 6 nights for a work trip, and only after four of those nights I wanted out!
The area of North Charleston is not that friendly for out of towners. There are homeless and drug addicts roaming the streets of NC and occupying the nearby restaurants. So bad that I've noticed a "scarecrow" police car sitting unoccupied (for the four days I was there) in the parking lot of the McDonald's on Ashley Phosphate road in front of the hotel. And going into that McDonald's I was quick to realize there were no police in sight as the clerk tried to explain to a group of homeless people that they had been previously trespassed from this location.
But the excitement doesn't stop there!
The hotel is fenced in and the surrounding neighborhood behind it doesn't match the modern look of the hotel, which even these local addicts realize this as a beacon for panhandling and extoring the business traffic that stays here.
Don't be fooled by a free breakfast and a "nice" room. You will be accosted by weirdos everywhere you go in North Charleston, especially if you "match the criteria of someone to target" as the front desk person told me after being blocked in my hotel parking spot by an ex-con (at least that's what they told me) demanding I roll my window down to talk to then, despite them saying they didn't want money.
Which if they didn't want my money, and were looking to rob/carjack me, I wasn't going to wait around and find out. The front desk guy called the NC police non-emergency number and no one responded. So take that however you want, but now I see why the room was non-cancellable. You'll want out too once you are accosted at your car by an ex-con.
So rather than being targeted on a business trip and having not even the local police there as a last resort, I decided to terminate my stay at this hotel two nights early to find someplace better near Summerville off the highway.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this place if you're traveling for business and working late. Being out in North Charleston after sundown is just asking for trouble, especially if you're...
Read moreThe stay started with a phone call from Hyatt Place North Charleston informing me that someone had called in on my behalf from another property to change my room type from a Double Queen w/ ADA to a Single King without. Regardless of why I need an ADA room, no one not named me should be calling--especially from another Hyatt property, to change my room. The only explanation I had was "it's not our location's fault, but your room is no longer available. We'll try to get another one ready but currently don't have anymore of what you requested. If it's not ready when you arrive, we may have to move you to another property," as if my choice in location didn't matter to me.
A few hours later, I receive a call telling me my original reservation will be honored, with the only apology being "sorry about that." Upon arrival, there were no luggage carts available, as there were guests in town for a junior hockey tournament, and all of the carts had been taken to the rooms and kept without anyone requesting that they be brought back down to the lobby. Speaking of the lobby, the lobby was a complete wreck due to children running muck, leaving trash wherever it fell, while the parents sat across from the registration desk belligerent and inebriated. Only one of the two elevators were in working order, with no signage on the defective lift. Our floor wreaked of cigarette smoke, which permeated into our room.
Our room had a refrigerator that had remained at room temperature the entire time. Housekeeping came in to swap towels while we were gone, but put in effort to change our bedding poorly. If I was being paid for how bad the bed was made, I would owe money. Before leaving, we attempted to power the TV on. The TV appeared to be disabled prior to check out. No power, no lights, not even the remote control worked.
I've stayed at a half-dozen or more Hyatt properties over the last few months. Hyatt North Charleston and Hyatt Nashville-Opryland are black eyes to your brand. I'll be back to both cities very soon, but I will never stay at nor recommend anyone...
