Booked room for 2 nights as part of a Stay to Play PBR event through GroupBook. When you arrive, you immediately see the property is rundown. The hotel is severely dated though a few cosmetic changes are apparent.
We arrived about an hour prior to check-in and needed to get to the field ASAP. We asked if our room was ready by chance. $25 for "early" check-in. We were given a room and told to drive around back for easier access. The parking lot, aside from the front, is in disrepair. We were given a paper placard to place on our dash to identify that we were staying there. No elevator, so carried all our stuff up one large flight of stairs. We passed the cleaning lady on our way down the hall. When we entered our room, to say I gasped was an understatement. It was FILTHY. I would have rather been told our room wasn't ready yet. Food all over the floor (pretzels, chips, and lord knows what else, gum stuck on floor in front of bathroom), trash left in the two small trash cans, no TP on roll and no extra roll, shower was dirty with strings of dark black hair, toilet had a ring around the bowl that looked moldy, only 2 bath towels for the three of us, dust and drinking glass rings on top of literally every furniture piece. Mattress pad was very visibly stained as was comforter. My husband approached the cleaning lady who was not responsive, so he borrowed her broom and pan to sweep the floor. Luckily, I carry cleaning supplies and went to work quickly because we were short on time. I felt disgusting. I wiped the bathroom floor with Fabuloso wipes and they were black. There is no way our room was fully cleaned. The beds were made (linens changed??) and towels were hung in the bathroom, but the rest of the room was untouched from a cleaning perspective. There was a power surge strip affixed to the side of the desk and only two USB ports on the nightstand near the beds. The dust on the light fixtures had to be at least an inch thick. Right below each picture was about a 3-4" hole, like they were ripped off the walls. The curtains looked dingey and the pull sticks were visibly dirty.
After our late games, when we arrived back at the hotel, there was no option to change rooms, the place was booked solid due to baseball. My son went to take a shower. The bottom of the shower curtain was nasty. NO water pressure. I mean, like none, unless you turned the temp to scalding hot. Someone was changing the light fixtures in the hall, they were crazy bright, and we had to block the bottom of our door to keep it from coming in all night. I literally could not sleep anyway because I felt so gross. Our room had two double beds which seemed really small. Walls are paper thin, and if you have an adjoining room door, it's even worse. Felt like the neighboring guests were in our room when they talked.
About the only good thing was the AC worked really well and the room went from hot to freezing quickly. The fridge is decent size, not one of those super small mini fridges. Free breakfast was ok, had the usual pancake maker, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy. Drink options limited to OJ, milk, or coffee. I stuck with peanut butter toast. The hotel was in a convenient area, lots of food options, etc.
We were booked for two nights (Friday and Saturday) but got eliminated on Saturday. Not a single member of our team stayed their second night after our two games on Saturday. It was a long day and a 4-5 hr drive home, but I could not wait to get home and take a shower. Pretty sure we left our room cleaner than it was upon check-in. I am shocked that PBR uses this location as a hotel choice when there are plenty in the area to choose from. I understand the rate was less than $100/night, but basic cleanliness is a must. When I complained at check-out, I was given a card with the general managers name on it, Crystal. I've seen her response to reviews, and I understand she is doing the best she can with what she has. I'm not optimistic anything at this location will improve though unless Choice and the owners make some serious...
Read moreWe stayed there just before the 4th of July weekend. We stopped here for 2 nights on our way back from a camping trip to Tennessee, and we wanted to do a day at the Toldeo Zoo, and this was budget friendly so we booked it.
We get there, parking lot is empty. Immediately my radar is going off. Uh oh. We walked into the lobby and it immediately smelled like dog pee and weed. And that smell really didn't go away. it was awful.
Staff on shift were friendly enough, but you could tell that they were pretty much by themselves. We get into the room, it was clean and tidy, but there were still little pieces of garbage hiding from the last person that stayed there. Ah, we can deal with that.
Then I went to turn the TV on. . . . where's the remote? We searched everywhere, no remote. So I pick up the room phone and dial the front desk. busy signal. ok. wait a few mins, try again, busy signal. Ok, so I throw my shoes back on and to the front desk I go. I tell the polite lady behind the desk what's happening, and she pulls out 2 different remotes from a tote in a cupboard and says try these. . . . what? lol. So I go back, try them. neither work. go back up, try a 3rd one. no dice. ok. so they ask us if we wanted to swap rooms, or just have maintanence look at it in the morning. we were tired, kids wanted to swim, so we said don't worry about it, we're already unpacked, we can deal with it in the morning. ok cool.
brought the kids swimming. pool area was decent enough, indoors, but it was hotter than a factory in the summer hot in there. like uncomfortably warm. I didn't go swimming so maybe the water was cold, and thats why it was so hot? kids didn't seem to mind.
The people already staying there were. . . interesting. You could tell that they had some longer term stays, and the price of the room attracts those types of people. The smell of weed was still pretty dominant in the hallways, and the staff working around the building seemed less than enthused to be there. I get it though.
So anyway, next morning we go down for breakfast and its the saddest breakfast we've seen at a hotel, even for the price point. And the man watching over the breakfast area was only putting out super basic stuff. and then we'd have to ask to have things refilled (bagels, apples, milk, etc). Everyone eating breakfast is coughing, assuming that its the AC units in each room. they were awful. we all had sore throats in the morning, as they were giving off that cold, musty kind of air conditioning.
overall, was the stay the worst thing I've experienced, no. would it come in clutch if you really needed to stop last minute? yes. Would I stay there again? Under new management, with someone that takes pride in their business? maybe. it needs an overhaul. the hallway carpets need to be ripped out. with proper retheming, and care, and even a price raise would cancel a lot of that out. they should pay attention to what guests with families actually need, instead of charging bottom dollar to get people in the door. With such close proximity to Toldeo Zoo, it could be a great place for families to feel safe and secure. And the breakfast and "dinner offerings" need to be elevated and shown the same care. If you increased your "quality", you could really be competitive with the other motels accross the parking lot.
After our stay, my wife received a "Did you enjoy your stay" follow up email. And my wife politely explained what we didn't enjoy and our issues. and then the manager proceeded to argue with her via email. She still has them! lol. that's not the way to do business. I don't care how proud you think you are. Clients and customers needs come first in hospitality. always. So maybe look at that too. People are too focused on making a dollar instead of building an experience. and our experience wasn't the greatest. stop being slumlords and put some time and effort back into your business and I bet you'd see your margins go up once word...
Read moreI've had mediocre experiences here before and never complained about the usual cutting of corners since pretty much all low to mid-range hotels are doing it. The staff here are nice in general, and I don't place the issues on them. They only do what they can with what they have. This most recent visit will have to be my last, though.
I strongly suggest not accepting Room 138, at least not for the remainder of winter. When my partner and I arrived, the room was in the 40s. That's not an exaggeration -- we could see a little of our breath after walking in. The heat hadn't been on in too long. We turned the old HVAC unit on high heat (no temperature settings -- first time I've run into this with a hotel in over a decade) yet it took about 12 hours to get to the point where we didn't have to run to the bathroom and back to avoid the cold (we spent pretty much the entire first evening under covers to try to warm up), and about 24 hours to get to where we were comfortable enough sitting on top of the covers. We had no idea it would take that long to warm up -- just kept hoping it would as soon as possible. The bathroom was icy since no heat gets to it unless you keep the door propped open (which also means more to heat). I reluctantly left the room about 7 hours after we arrived to ask the front desk if they could give us extra blankets. I requested three since the ones on the beds are really thin, but was told they probably didn't even have three extra blankets (!) We got one comforter that turned out to be (blood?) stained -- we kept it because we were desperate. We didn't want to change rooms at this point out of fear we would need to start all over again heating up another room. We were tired and had already put all our stuff away. My partner works in maintenance and suspected the filter in the HVAC hadn't been cleaned. Upon opening it up on Day 2, we discovered it couldn't have been cleaned any earlier than maybe a year ago. He brushed off as much as possible outside before replacing it. Not sure if it made a big difference by that point, but at least it was something.
On a side note, for some reason, we got what appears to be a handicap accessible room, which we hadn't requested. If you're disabled, you might want to skip 138 for now. There are at least a few possible ADA compliance issues, such as the mousetrap hinges on the heavy bathroom door that force it shut when not propped open, and the fact that the toilet handle is on the wrong side.
Like I said, I don't really expect much from any hotel these days, but I've never stayed anywhere this cold and difficult to warm up. My partner books the rooms, and he agrees that we just can't come...
