We had an excellent experience at Homewood Suites, downtown Salt Lake City! We booked a one bedroom king room with kitchenette and it was wonderful! It was super clean and had updated decor and felt like an Airbnb rather than a hotel room. The bed was SUPER comfortable and the pillows were just like the ones we have at home that we bought after loving the pillows at the Comfort Inn. It was so much better than a standard hotel room due to all the extra amenities. There was a LOT of storage for your belongings. Drawers in the bathroom, storage under the vanity, closet, dresser in the bedroom and living room, and drawers in the nightstands. The desk in the living room even had a mirror above it if you needed to put your makeup on there. The kitchen had everything we needed. The bathroom vanity has a nice lighted mirror and I LOVED that they had liquid hand soap and lotion in large refillable bottles rather than having to use bar soap to wash your hands and deal with tiny travel size bottles. The bathtub had large refillable bottles of body soap, shampoo, and conditioner as well. I loved this! The AC is central with no loud unit and there is even a ceiling fan! I couldn’t believe that. I’ve never stayed in a hotel with a ceiling fan! I was mad at a reviewer who said the hot tub and pool were not usable and full of algae. Not the case. The pool and hot tub were fully operational and they provide pool towels right by the entrance to the pool. The staff there were all super friendly! The lobby is beautiful. You do have to use your room key to access the lobby door but I liked that because I felt more secure. You have to do this in the elevator, too. The breakfast was good and had a wide variety of options that changed a bit daily for good variety. We opted for the parking garage which costs $10.99 a day, and if you stay 3 nights they charge you for four days, because technically you are there for four days. You can park on the street for free but the garage parking was easier and more secure for us, so worth the added expense. We paid $150 extra ($25 per night, per pet) to have our dogs with us, but the hotel is super pet friendly and so comfortable that it was worth the extra expense.
The rest of this review is mainly meant for people traveling with their dogs. We brought our two large dogs and loved that Pioneer Park has a large dog park on its SE corner and was right next door. I read reviews and was worried about the mention of aggressive homeless people but although we encountered the homeless, none were aggressive and we know that every large city does have a homeless population—they are people and should be treated with empathy and respect. There are a lot of restaurants that are walkable and other attractions are a short distance. We ate at Squatters Pub Brewery twice because they have a shady dog friendly patio with misters. It was in the high 90’s when we were there so we appreciated that. Both servers were meh but the hosts were super friendly as were the patrons who also brought their dogs. The food was pretty good too! We loved Memory Grove Park! Dogs are allowed off leash and our pups LOVED running through the creek! We didn’t like The Gateway shopping center so avoid this if you have dogs, although we were surprised that the restaurant there called the Hallpass allowed our dogs to come inside! That restaurant isn’t even mentioned on Bring Fido. Also nearby is a hike to Dog Lake in Millcreek Canyon. It’s off leash on odd days. Parking was minimal so we had to wait a long time and there were biting flies but it was BEAUTIFUL and our...
Read moreBack in April I reserved a room for July 21-25 at a Hilton Honors Prepay & Save rate of $115/night that required prepayment of 1 night’s lodging. It had a 72-hour cancellation policy to avoid penalties for “changes or cancellation.” As the trip approached our needs evolved so that we didn’t need the last night (7/24), but Hilton’s website wouldn’t let me cancel the last night without jacking up the rates for all the other nights of the prepaid stay. Worse, after a lengthy stay at another Hilton earlier in July I could feel myself coming down with a cold.
There were less expensive options in SLC but we had stayed at this hotel before and I wanted my wife to be at a familiar hotel if she had to take our son on this trip without me. I called the front desk a week before arrival and Yeona assured me that they would honor the prepaid rates I had booked in April. She said the front desk would change the checkout date at checkout since Hilton’s reservation system would otherwise increase all of the nightly rates, confirming my experience with Hilton’s website. I have a confirmation email from Hilton dated 7/14 with the original rates and a note by Yeona confirming that we would not be penalized for checking out a day early. I didn’t think the hotel would mind the chance to rebook the night of 7/24 since that is Pioneer Day in Utah and various events were scheduled in and around SLC that weekend.
As feared, I was too sick (though not with COVID-19) to go on the trip. My wife checked at the front desk upon arrival and several times during her stay and was repeatedly reassured that the original rates would be honored even though she was checking out on the 24th. When checkout time arrived, the front desk was somehow unable to print out a receipt until the last second as my wife tried to direct a lost Lyft driver to the hotel. She grabbed the receipt with no time to spare and dashed off to the airport with our son.
When my wife got home and I saw the receipt it was clear that Hilton had NOT honored the original rates; in fact they raised the rate to $215/night after repeatedly assuring us this wouldn’t happen. I contacted the hotel on 7/25, explained the mistake to Shara, and forwarded a copy of Hilton’s confirmation email of 7/14 with the original rates and Yeona’s note re: our early checkout. After a few back-and-forth calls over the next couple days I was told that “management” would correct the billing in a few days, which should have reduced the balance that we were charged for this 3-night stay by about $300. It has now been FOUR WEEKS since I contacted the hotel and no such correction has appeared on my credit card account.
It is insulting to be forced to waste time repeatedly telephoning and composing a missive like this explaining a mistake to a business that supposedly values my loyalty. (I am a Hilton Honors Platinum member.) I hold Hilton, not some low-level individual, responsible for a reservation system that deliberately misleads customers regarding what should be routine changes to existing (even PREPAID) reservations and that makes it very difficult for local management to accommodate simple requests like ours. In the four weeks since I reported this to Hilton I have planned several (hopefully post-pandemic) trips for the coming year, as far out as July 2022. NONE of them includes reservations at Hilton properties, and Hilton will not get any more of my business until they correct their mistake regarding...
Read moreHad a horrible experience here. From the moment I checked in, the receptionist was extremely rude to me because she thought I was an uber eats driver. I stayed here overnight and felt really unsafe due to the location and over 20 homeless people living right outside of the front entrance. I was supposed to be here for three days. I am a young woman traveling alone on business and I received a very strange call on my hotel room phone, from a man making weird noises and mocking me. My room was at the very end of a long hallway by itself and I felt really unsafe. I went down to reception to ask if I could potentially change rooms, because I was concerned about the phone call I received and felt unsafe. The receptionist was extremely rude, telling me "we dont have random people calling our hotel" as if I was making this story up. The call came from someone inside of the hotel because the phones are so outdated that you still have the option to call room to room with no security clearance. There are so many scenarios as to why someone would be calling me like that, I felt it was completely reasonable that I felt unsafe. The receptionist could not tell me where the call came from, and refused to put me in another room. She said that this hotel was "safe" and "secure" and that she could "have the security guard do an extra lap on my floor that night". Not sure how that would really make a difference. On top of this, the guests who were at reception before me were complaining because they were given the keys to someone else's room and walked in on them. So clearly whoever is in charge of safety and security here isn't doing their job. I told the receptionist that I was just going to leave the hotel and find a room elsewhere. She shrugged her shoulders, and I said I would appreciate a refund for that night since I wont be staying there. She said "I'm not going to be doing that" in the most condescending and rude way possible. I left this hotel extremely frustrated. If she had been accommodating, or even somewhat apologetic, it would have been a different story. This woman did not apologize to me ONCE. Instead, she gaslighted me and made me feel even more uncomfortable. I ended up getting a room at the Marriot down the street and it was like night and day. They were so accommodating and apologetic as if it had been THEIR FAULT that i just went through that experience. I tried calling the assistant GM and the GM, left a voicemail, and never received a call back. I did eventually receive a refund via email, with no apology whatsoever. I feel fortunate that my company was paying for my stay here, because I can't imagine being in this situation and potentially not being able to afford booking another hotel last minute with a last minute rate. Being forced to choose between feeling extremely unsafe and uncomfortable/probably not being able to sleep, or getting a hotel elsewhere and putting yourself in a financial hole. It's also such a shame that all of these employees were women, and did not have one bit of sympathy or understanding towards the situation. Being a woman traveling alone can be really dangerous, and its a shame that these employees have no regard for their guests safety. I will never be returning to a Homewood Suites on my company's dime, or my own. Absolute worst...
