Wanyen — Restaurant in Salt Lake City

Wanyen is a Salt Lake treasure and a must go when visiting the city. The size of my food fetus can attest to my addiction to sweets and desserts so I know what I am talking about. The mangoes and sticky rice here are by far and away amongst the best I've ever had, including when I lived in Thailand for 2 years. We got both the mango and coconut based ice creams and they were phenomenal!

Jade is a rock star with her incredibly delicious ice cream that she makes herself. The mango ice cream and the coconut based ice creams that we had were phenomenal. If anyone ever wakes up one morning, and asks themselves, I wonder where I could go get some charcoal ice cream? Well here is your place, and it is good! They have a lot of Asian inspired flavors of ice cream and we sampled several flavors and they all made visions of sugar plums dance in my head. If I lived in Salt Lake City I would be camped out in front of their door every morning waiting for them to open or I would ask them if I could work there and get paid in ice cream and mangoes and sticky rice. This will be a stop of ours every time we come down from Idaho.

Wanyen is the spot our Central 9th neighborhood didn't know it was missing, and now I can't imagine it without it. This isn't just another ice cream shop; it's a small-batch gem serving up genuinely exciting flavors. They absolutely nail authentic Asian-inspired classics. The Ube is perfectly earthy and sweet, the Black Sesame is rich and nutty, and the Mango Sticky Rice is spot-on. It’s the real deal. And for the adventurous, yes, they have Durian. If you know, you know. It’s a wild, custardy ride, and the fact they serve this controversial king of fruits in SLC is just awesome. Tried Wanyen for the first time and was really excited we finally have an ice cream shop with unique Asian flavors. There was a good variety of ice creams and you can have up to 3 samples per person. We ended up getting the mango sticky rice and the Thai Tea.

When we first walked in, it was a while before the staff acknowledged us. They were fulfilling a few orders from the group before, so they were probably distracted, but it didn’t feel as welcoming.
