I've never been so disappointed in a property as I was with the comfort inn gaslamp district. I stayed 1 night and picked the location based upon my choice privileges membership and the location of the property being only a few blocks from the San Diego civic theater where we were attending a comedy show. Upon check in the desk attendant informed me that the parking was sold out for the on-site lot and that I would need to move my car to another lot across the street. Disappointing first impression. After receiving my room key card I relocated my car only to find that the lot I was sent to was full and being barricaded by the attendant. There were a few spots open and the attendant directed me to drive around the lot and find an open space. The problem is that the open spaces were open because one of the vehicles parked in an adjacent spot was well over the line and encroaching into the "open" space. The spaces were very narrow in the first place and then full size trucks and large suv's that failed to park precisely in the center of the space were hanging over into the adjacent space.
I reluctantly parked in an open space and returned to the comfort inn with my bags to go to our room. My girlfriend noticed that the comforter looked rumpled and wrinkled, as though the bed had just been pulled up, not made. I pulled back the covers and the sheets appeared to have been slept on and not changed. Upon noticing the sheets and bed i called down to the front desk. I was put on hold and a couple of minutes later the attendant answered my call. I informed him that the bed appeared to have been slept in and not clean. He offered to give me a different room. We went back to the front desk and received a new room key card. That was the first point in my visit that seemed to display some value to my patronage. The new room had a double bed which was fairly small for the 2 of us.
The breakfast in the morning was also lacking and not up to the corporate standard in my opinion and experience.
I will not return to this location in the future. I could have lived with the very small rooms and even the parking situation considering the location and space constraints of the gas lamp district. But everything together, especially the bed's condition and being moved to a room with a double bed really soured my experience to the point at which i sighed in relief at checkout, thankful that I was leaving, rather than my usual disappointment at the end of my...
I’ll start off by saying I would stay here again. We were attending a concert at Petco Park and wanted to be able to quickly walk back to the hotel at night. It took us less than 10 minutes to get back and we were able to experience some top notch eateries in the Gaslamp Quarter by taking a quick stroll. As other reviews have said, there are quite a few unhoused folks around, but there were no issues with any of them. Just be aware. The hotel has a small lot with $50 parking per night which we knew about and were fine with, considering many hotels have zero parking or fees up to $85 per night. We could see our car from our hotel room, which was nice too. I brought earplugs based on reviews of hotels in the area being near bars, but there was no extra noise at our hotel from outside. The doors opening and slamming shut were quite loud though and our AC unit made quite a clunk when it would turn off. I did end up wearing my earplugs for those reasons. The room was very clean but smelled a little funky, almost like someone went to the bathroom and it had almost aired out, but not completely lol. It was so faint that we didn’t want to go through the hassle of changing rooms, but I wonder if they all had it or it was just ours. I was glad we were on the third floor so I could keep the window open for fresh air. The AC unit was a bit musty when we used it, but worked well to keep the room cold. Free breakfast was fair. They had a good amount of options, but the premixed pancake batter was runny and though I waited for the self timer on the waffle iron to finish, the waffles were wet inside. I ended up tossing the waffles and we went across the street to eat instead. It was a blessing in disguise because that breakfast spot is amazing. Staff were all courteous. My biggest complaint is the curtains they used. There was an ax unit in the window, so they had a full length blackout curtain on one side, then on the AC side, one cut short to go above the AC unit. But it didn’t go low enough to touch the unit, so you had several inches of light putting through in the morning. So strange. For the price and location I’d definitely stay here again though. I just need to remember earplugs, a sleep mask to cover my eyes and room deodorizer,...
Read moreI stayed at the hotel during a conference in October 2024. The hotel was around a 15 minute walk from the convention centre. There were homeless people around but they weren't troublesome and I felt safe walking to and from the Convention Centre, and even heading out in an evening on my own to get dinner in the Gaslamp Quarter. The area is busy, there are lots of restaurants and bars so I didn't feel isolated. ||The hotel always had someone helpful and polite on reception. There was coffee, water and fruit always available in reception too. The staff were happy to store your luggage before check in and after check out. They can call you a cab to the airport. However, there is a bus stop around 3 blocks away which can take you to the airport at a fraction of the cost. There is a nice reception room with chairs and a little courtyard to sit out if you wanted. There are no wc's in the reception area though.||The room I had did not have a great view, but I wasn't bothered. The bed was comfortable, there was always hot water for showers, the room was small but not poky, it was clean, there were toiletries provided.||There were some noise issues. The hotel is not far from the Gaslamp Quarter. You could hear cars and people outside. The other noise was from the water system when people in the next room were showering. This in particular could be quite loud, and a bit distracting, if you are on conference calls, or needing quiet time. ||There was a breakfast every morning, with eggs, sausages, pancakes, toast, fruit, yoghurt, cereals, muffins, bagels, juice and coffee. I knew there would be breakfast, but thought it would be minimal. I was pleasantly surprised that there were some hot options available.||Overall, I was quite happy to stay here, and I would choose to stay here again for a good value and convenient choice for the gaslamp district and...
