Full service hotel with reasonable rates close to the Grand Canyon National Park South Rim entrance. Excellent indoor hot tub in a nice indoor court yard/garden setting along with an adjacent pub.
There is a small outdoor pool and hot tub next to the adjacent building which also has a guest laundry room and small fitness center.
The hotel lobby has a nice gift shop along with a restaurant and pub. The only drawbacks are no room service and $1 surcharge for to go orders.
My only complaints were that the bathroom, at least in my third floor room where I entered from the indoor courtyard/garden area, did not have a vent, so unfortunately I had to open the room window every time I used the toilet or took a shower and leave the bathroom door open plus turn off all the room lights so I can have some privacy.
Speaking of the room window, I had to leave it wide open overnight and while I was gone during the day, visiting The Grand Canyon, because the third and top floor became very warm, almost hot when I checked in (I do not recommend letting them give you a third floor room during Summer).
On the night I checked in, I did notice a dead beetle or some other kind of desert bug in the alternate card activated entryway on the rear side (which was closest to my room and parking). I figured because I had to check in after midnight that Housekeeping was not available to keep that area clean; however, my last night here, while I was using the bathroom (having to leave the bathroom door and room window wide open to avoid stuffiness and odor) I suddenly noticed a beetle crawling on the hardwood floor, not as disgusting as a cockroach but sickening enough.
Therefore my suggestions are not only to keep this place well exterminated and spic ‘n span disinfected, but especially install good ventilation in the bathrooms (a good vent that sucks the bad air and steam outside and not recirculate everything). And also remodel and update the bathtub which had a few nicks in it.
Sadly, I have to reduce my overall rating from three stars to two, because of the unprofessionalism and lack of empathy from Erin. I accidentally left a new pair of $100 bifocals in the room and was not aware until two days after I had checked out and arrived home, approximately 330 miles away. I called immediately on Thu Sep 7th (two days after checking out) and was told by Erin that she would check the lost and found and ask the housekeeper assigned to cleaning the room I stayed in (#383). She also said that she would call me back the next day. I never received an email or phone call yet she asked for all of this information. I ended up having to call back the following Saturday evening Sep 9th and Erin said she forgot to call back. I can understand if nothing showed up in lost and found right away, but I told her my concerns were that either a housekeeper didn’t turn them in (stealing) or they might show up a week or so later. Erin didn’t acknowledge or offer to keep an eye out for them and get back to me. She wasn’t very apologetic and no empathy whatsoever.
I asked to speak to the owner and was told that she passed away recently (very tragic and I even commented to Erin how sorry I was) and they haven’t been able to get in touch with family.
So now another guest or employee has an expensive pair of bifocals and no way to prove they are mine. Or, they will show up in their lost and found room/department weeks later and no one will reach out to me by text, phone, email, or letter even, to notify me.
I’m paying extra money next time to stay at the Best Western or Holiday Inn Express with not just good ventilation in the bathrooms but also more polite and...
Read moreWhen I checked into the Grand Canyon Plaza Hotel, I was not expecting that it would share so much with the Grand Canyon - ancient eroded crumbling ...rooms. Unfortunately, these attributes are not so great in a hotel. I rarely give 1-star reviews, but I find that these days, as someone who is a 9-to-5er, it is so important that my vacation time is spent pleasantly. It is a testament to the majesty of the Grand Canyon that my stay at the Plaza Hotel will be an unpleasant footnote, but man, I sure would have been better prepared for hiking, sight-seeing, photography, and wildlife watching had I been able to sleep on something that resembled a bed, in room that was at least clean.
I am not exaggerating when I say that my room was basically disgusting. Stains covered the sheets of the beds, the beds themselves were lumpy knotted springs, the decor confusing, with gigantic lamps taking up entire four foot tables, with chairs strewn about with no real way to sit down. The bathroom seemed to have kitchen counter-top quality granite glued to the walls to create the appearance of luxury, but it only offset the surrounding grossness. The toilet seat was eroded past the white surface, creating an unpleasant permanent brown smear look. The bathroom smelled like a public rest-stop. The toilet had trouble flushing - at one point it clogged, and thankfully, a plunger was sent immediately to my room. However, when it arrived, it was in a strange plastic bag, and when removed, there was dried toilet paper plastered around the well worn black rubber. It was nauseating, but to its credit, performed admirably.
Walls seemed to have holes punched in them, that were hastily patched. The carpet was like a dingy 1970s office. The grout was dark grey with embedded filth. The air conditioner worked (thank god) but it was clearly a relic of the past, rattling on for dear life - if off for mere moments, the poor insulation of the room resulted in an immediate return to oven-like standard temperature. The ice bucket had some kind of dried slime on top that was somehow both viscous and sticky.
Anyway, this room was gross. I slept very poorly. I expected much, much more from a 3-star hotel that charges over $500 for two nights - honestly, camping in my car would have been preferable (and probably more fun). All I can say for my experience, is that it was very convenient to get to Grand Canyon National Park, there were nice pictures of the Grand Canyon on the wall, and that the hotel is walking distance to a few OK-ish eating options.
If you're looking for a 3-star hotel experience, just get an AirBnB, or try your luck with another hotel, because this...
Read moreThe hotel is located at the back of the hotel area and feels like the back parking lot of another hotel.
When we arrived it was not clear where the entrance to the hotel was and where we could park to check in.
The hotel's parking arrangement is like a motel and this is not what we expected to get. But this is a very small thing that bothered us during my stay at this hotel.
I will continue to write about the check-in experience and the lobby, quite noisy, a very long line in the afternoon. The hot drink station is quite poor and there is no hot chocolate like in other hotels where we stayed in this area and in other areas near the national parks during the winter season.
The locations of the rooms are arranged in a terrible way giving the feeling of a hostel. The smell of the pool water in the center of the hotel plaza is unbearable because of the jacuzzi (I will expand on it later). The noise of the music trying to reduce the noise of the people because of the terrible acoustics makes for an unpleasant experience at all
The room looks nice at first glance (as you can see in the pictures) but after a few minutes you can understand that this is not the case.
In the shower, the bath mat rests on the toilet cistern and touches the towels, the shower itself creates an unpleasant atmosphere mainly because of a yellow curtain from being too old.
I'll continue talking about the bed which was one of the worst I've slept in for years, the bed has a dent in the middle and back pain was felt by both me and my partner during the night and the morning. In addition to this, the pillows were not comfortable at all and contributed to these back pains.
Regarding the hotel facilities, the jacuzzi is very crowded, we couldn't turn on the water jets for some reason, an unclean feeling in the water, a dirty floor with leaves around the jacuzzi and as I said already, terrible acoustics.
The hotel does not offer breakfast but offers a 10 percent discount to the restaurant located inside the hotel and charges extremely high prices (I'm only saying this from looking at the menu).
I will conclude and say it simply, I would not recommend staying...
