This restaurant is better than the online reviews give it credit for. But not by much. I've never seen a place where national fast food restaurants, are rated better than the local restaurants on service and quality. I'm staying at the Holiday Inn Express right here in town, and I read all the reviews for all the restaurants here on the main strip. It seemed that there was a pretty big swing between people who loved it and people who hated it. The overwhelming majority of people complain about the high prices, which is completely unfair. All the restaurants here or over the price just like any other tourist trap town in the world. If you take away the fact that everything is at least 30% higher here than your hometown, it kind of levels the playing field. As far as Plaza Bonita goes, nothing here was terrible, and nothing here was great. The service wasn't bad but it wasn't really good. If I had to choose an item that was the best as far as flavor goes, they're salsa that they provide when you sit down, it's really good. Be careful though, one of them is spicy and one of them is not but they don't tell you. It's kind of like playing salsa roulette, which is the Hispanic version of Russian Roulette, except that nobody dies. I ordered the carne asada plate, two enchiladas, and fried ice cream. Again, nothing was fantastic, but nothing was actually bad. If I lived in this town and this is the only option for Mexican food, I would probably come back. But if this restaurant were in my hometown, I would probably never go back. The hostesses, and the wait staff were very friendly and mostly attentive. If you're looking for authentic Mexican food, this probably isn't the place. But if you're in town, and you're nervous about trying the steak houses across the street, which I decided, based on reviews that I would not, this is a very good option. Of course, it was down to between Plaza Bonita, and Wendy's which is a really bad spot to be in. Thankfully, the Grand Canyon is so ridiculously Majestic and beautiful it kind of makes up for all the...
Read moreHubby and I came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. The restaurant was busy but there was no wait.
I ordered the Chiles Colorado (slow cooked beef) which came with rice and beans and tortillas.
My hubby got the Tacos al Pastor (pork and pineapple) which also came with rice and beans, lime wedges and a side of salsa.
Our server Roger immediately greeted us and took our drink orders. He gave us some time to review the menu and brought us fresh warm tortilla chips and two individual sides of salsa. The chips were lightly salted and the salsa had great flavor with just a teensy bit of spice to it.
I asked for Roger's recommendation between the Chiles Colorado, the Mexican Stir Fry and the Pork Carnitas. He said he'd choose either of the first two.
I chose Chiles Colorado. The beef was super tender. The sauce it was cooked in definitely had a bite to it (spicy) but nothing a little side of sour cream couldn't tame down a notch. The rice and refried beans were pretty standard. My only critique was that the flour tortillas were greasy. They were definitely house made, but it seems like the cook put too much oil on the grill when cooking them. Any fresh flour tortillas I've had have been a little fluffier. They still had a good flavor though.
My husband had no complaints about his tacos. The presentation was nice. I was only slightly saddened that the picture in the menu showed the side of refried beans served in a little crispy taco bowl but they came in just a regular little bowl. (This is obviously super super minor, I'm just a dork and like cute little things like that.)
Would definitely come back to try more if we were staying longer.
For the two meals plus drinks we spent just over $60 before tip. Compared to the authentic Mexican restaurants back home (central Florida) this feels a little high, but it's to be expected in such a touristy (and...
Read moreWe traveled all the way from arkansas to visit the grand canyon, we had a group of 4 adults and 2 kids. After seeing the canyon we all decided we wanted to eat some Mexican food. The atmosphere in the restaurant was good but the food and the service was absolutely terrible. I should have known better stopping at this restaurant after reading the bad reviews but we decided to give it a try because we were all hungry and didn't want the mcdonalds across the street. In total the bill came out to 190.85 for the worst Mexican food I've had in a long time. I got the super nachos which was 19 dollars and when they brought it out it looked like something one of my kids would have made in a microwave. We ordered a cheese dip which was $12 dollars and it was barely enough for 2 people. My friend ordered an Arnold Palmer which was $5 and he took 2 sips and didn't like it because it was watered down so he asked for a different drink. They brought him a new drink but instead of taking the drink off the bill they just charged him anyway. My wife ordered the birria plate which was the only half way decent looking meal anyone in my group received. I know it is in a kind of touristy part of that area so I expected it to be pricey. But for the food we recieved it was unbelievable. We had 3 or 4 different waiters waiting on our table which was unnecessary because the resturant wasn't even half full at the time we dined there at 1230. Again another warning sign. All in all i wouldn't recommend this resturant to anyone visiting the canyon. Worst mexican food I've had and that's saying something because we have some pretty shawty mexican resturants in this state. Save yourself money and aggravation and just eat the mcdonalds across the way. I'm sure the food is better. Failed to take pictures for reference, none of the food was...
