Petit Ermitage: A Magical Hideaway with Great Cocktails & Thick Napkins I’ve celebrated many birthdays at Petit Ermitage, and every time I return, it feels like stepping into a magician’s private lair—if that magician had excellent taste in cocktails and a passion for mood lighting. My most recent visit? Fantastic. The ambiance was as enchanting as ever, the service was lovely, and the food and drinks did not disappoint. The Food: Choose Wisely • The Smash Burger – Okay, I’ll be honest: I wanted to love it more than I did. It wasn’t bad at all—definitely a solid choice if you’re in the mood for a classic, no-frills smash burger. The flavors were there, and it had that crispy-edge sear you want, but if you’re expecting something that reinvents the burger experience, this isn’t that. If you’re a burger purist, you’ll probably enjoy it, but personally? • The Chicken – This one takes the crown. Juicy, flavorful, and just a well-balanced dish all around. If you’re torn between the two, I’d nudge you toward the chicken. The Cocktails: A+ in Liquid Alchemy Petit Ermitage doesn’t just serve drinks—they serve potions of pure delight. The cocktails are creative, well-crafted, and dangerously drinkable. You know a place is doing it right when you’re already thinking about your next order before finishing your first. The Vibe: A Secret Society for the Cool & Curious The ambiance here is impeccable. It’s intimate, mysterious, and effortlessly stylish—like the kind of place where a magician might be staying between shows. The lighting is just right, the crowd is interesting, and it all feels like a hidden world that you want to be part of. The Bathrooms: A Full-On Experience I won’t spoil anything, but the bathrooms have personality. It’s the kind of place where you walk in, pause for a moment, and think, “Huh… well, that’s different.” The Napkins: MVP of the Night Now, let’s talk about a true highlight of the evening—the napkins. These aren’t your typical, flimsy, fall-apart napkins. These are THICK bois. Luxurious, substantial, and boldly printed with the word “Wet?” on them. Why? No one knows. But somehow, it just makes sense. The Catch: You Gotta Be on the List This isn’t your walk-in-and-grab-a-table kind of spot. You need to be on the list or invited, which adds to the exclusive, tucked-away charm. Final Verdict: Petit Ermitage is a fantastic spot for a special evening. The ambiance is magical, the cocktails are top-tier, and the food is solid. While the smash burger is good, the chicken is the real winner if you want a standout dish. Plus, the napkins alone deserve their own Michelin star. Would I come back? In a heartbeat. Would I frame one of their napkins as modern art? Not ruling it out.

My husband and I stayed here for his birthday trip to L.A this week. We really enjoyed our stay but there are some things to know if you're coming here for the first time. The hotel website does not mention a deposit (unless we missed it) but they charge a $450 deposit upon check in. The food/drink/clothing items in the room are not free other than the robe and slippers (free to wear, not to take home). The bikini is NOT free lol. They do not tell you that the mini bar items cost extra, so don't assume that they are free! They cost money and aren't cheap. Shaun and JT were very welcoming and informing upon check in. We experienced a very delayed flight which sucked and Shaun was very empathetic which was nice. Ben at the bar upstairs was kind and friendly. We did not end up formally eating at the restaurant but i did have the watermelon tuna poke salad by the pool which was really good. We did spend some time on the rooftop and be warned: If you are not a private member or with a party of more than 2 it seems that you will be ignored by rooftop staff. It seems like they cater to their members and/or larger groups which I guess makes since, but at the same time they seem to make hotel guests seem like outsiders or like you just dont exist, lol. Maybe that was just "our" experience, I'm not sure. The main server that night (Meredith) didnt even look in our direction for the first hour or 2 until we flagged her down. None of the other servers batted much of an eye in our direction either, but they were very attentive to others. After grabbing her attention, Meredith got us some drinks and recommended the poke salad (which again, was really good! Sounds strange but was good). Rooftop is nice with beautiful views. The interior of the hotel was nice and very vintage. The location was A+ nestled in west hollywood in a quaint and quiet area directly next to beverly hills. The hotel definitely gives old Hollywood vibes and has alot of character which was cool. Our rooms was clean although the carpets seemed dirty (maybe just because they are old). Overall, we really enjoyed our stay here.

The hotel is very unique and artistic. The ambience is really fun, and the rooftop deck is a wonderful place to relax. Everyone working there seems like a character. For the ambiance and service in the rooftop deck, five stars. Leroy was great. Drinks were great, food was good, and the live music was a nice bonus. The place where PE falls short is the actual hotel service. I’d give it two stars given the price. Our room had a climate control system that could not keep up with the heat (in April!). In addition, the TVs Internet connection didn’t work so we couldn’t watch any streaming services, and when they sent people up to fix it they didn’t know what to do. The foldaway bed was very saggy and uncomfortable. And the hotel staff didn’t even ask us how our stay was or if anything went wrong. When we did comment about the TV, the person at the front desk simply said yeah we’re having a problem with all of the rooms. For over $500 a night, I expect much better hotel accommodation. This was like motel-quality room and service. Parking was around $50/day and the valet service was always prompt and courteous. The hotel is in a great West Hollywood location. Walking distance to interesting nightlife. Ideally to me I’d visit friends who are staying here and hang on the incredible rooftop deck, but stay elsewhere.

After traveling over 20 hours from Buenos Aires, we arrived at the hotel at 1:15 p.m.—exhausted, hopeful, and ready for even a small dose of wonderfully bohemian hospitality. It was not our first stay, and our previous experience had been very pleasant. Unfortunately, what we received from the front desk was more performance art in indifference than any semblance of service, let alone going above and beyond.||At the front desk, Gabriella informed us our room wasn’t ready. Fair enough. I politely asked if we could be accommodated as soon as one became available. Her unconvincing reply: “I will see what we can do, but Check-in is at 4 p.m.” I assured her I knew the policy but was asking, as most hotels would understand, for a bit of compassion and initiative. I thought that in an hour or so a room would almost certainly be available, and she said she’d text us as soon as room was ready. She didn’t.||We went to the pool, had lunch, and by 3:00 p.m., still nothing. I went back down to check—only to be met with the same rebuff, delivered with the same deadpan precision: “I am sorry, nothing is available yet. Check-in is at 4 p.m.” She had a thing about 4pm.||Given that check-out is at 11 a.m., and the hotel charges a dollar a minute if you are late, the notion that no room was ready four hours later strains credulity. I explained again we’d been traveling for 24 hours and would really appreciate a shower and a change of clothes. No dice. It suddenly dawned on me that Gabriella had for some reason decided that, come hell or high water, she was not going to let us check in until 4:00 PM. This was a hill she was prepared to die on. Then came the pièce de résistance: 4:00 p.m. came and went—no text, no call. And when I went back down at 4:05, no Gabriella! I discovered she’d actually left at 3:30; apparently her shift expired at about the same time as my patience - so she knew full well she would not even have to face my full dissatisfaction. She literally didn’t give a damn. |A charming gentleman at the desk got us checked in immediately and noted that Gabriella was supposed to have called us. The contrast could not have been starker. In that moment, Petit Ermitage lived up to its online reputation: most of the staff are five kinds of fabulous, others seem to be conducting a psychological experiment on how far guests can be pushed before they snap. Incidentally, I was with one of the housekeeping staff in the elevator - she was the sweetest lady. If Gabriella had called her and said “how fast can you get a room ready for a guest who has been traveling for 24 hours?” I absolutely know she would have bent over backwards to get me into a room in well under an hour. Gabriella had turned what could have been an easy win for her and the hotel, into a guest who will never return.||To add to the absurdity, I was told there was no manager on duty, and no general manager at any time - only a reservations manager. That might explain why there’s no adult supervision. If there is a hotel policy that says no guest may be checked in until 4pm, it is an utterly misguided one. I noticed that at that time, several guests who had also been waiting by the pool to check in all descended on reception simultaneously, and the nice man quickly became overloaded, as was the porter, and the phone was ringing off the hook unanswered, and people were waiting, and it took a further 40 minutes to get my luggage delivered to the room (eventually done not by the porter, but by the nice man on the front desk!!). All of this overloaded chaos was entirely avoidable. If guests were checked in as rooms became available, the guests would be happy, the staff would not be stressed, and the hotel’s reputation would be intact. A much better system for all concerned.||A hotel that trades on “bohemian charm” might want to take a look at replacing staff who consider passive aggression and inflexibility a...

tldr: Our bill had bogus extra charges; the hotel was loud, in disrepair, and poorly managed to the detriment of guest experience.

Our stay at Petit Ermitage reminded us how badly a hotel can be run. On day 1, we dropped off our bags in the morning and the front desk promised to send them to our room when it was ready. At check-in time, we repeatedly asked if our bags were in our room and the guy at the desk just shrugged and said to call down if they weren't. Of course the bags were not in our room and the phone buttons for connections to all the hotel services including the front desk didn't work. The whole bag odyssey took 30 minutes to solve and my partner had to just go sit on our pool bed to hold our reservation in their street clothes while I sorted the whole mess out.

That night, we had cabaret reservations on the rooftop. Dolph Lundgren had rented half the roof for a private party for some liquor he was launching. The cabaret door person allowed 18 people from that party to cut in front of hotel guests with cabaret reservations. The 18 party people took all the actual seats and the host made hotel guests sit on the floor.

All these little things would have been overlooked if the hotel hadn't promised us a quiet room and then put us in a third floor room directly below the rooftop bar/restaurant area. Our room was filled with the sound of chairs scraping, high heels walking, and loud bass noise from 6 am-2am daily. It was so confusing to us because we overheard the front desk person saying they had plenty of rooms to someone on the phone on our second morning, so this room was definitely not the only place for them to put us.

Our impression after leaving is this is just a party hotel and that's not very clear from the website to people not from LA. The entire rooftop including the pool allows smoking. At one point, a man lit a cigar next us and we chose to end our pool visit early. On our final morning, a man slipped by the front desk and was knocking door to door on our floor looking for a man he had partied with the night before. It's very disturbing to have someone bang on your door over and over until you answer it, only to find they're just some person off the street.

The final insult to this whole disappointing experience came when we received our bill and found a number of charges for food and drink we didn't authorize on our room. After we discussed this with the front desk, they removed only some of the charges that were unauthorized but added a new $15 charge for a "stained towel that couldn't be cleaned". Given the number of towels that must be stained with food and wine daily during normal pool service, this charge struck us as a petty add-on. For the rest of the charges, they advised us to call for a manager during work hours M-F which we feel is much more friction than is reasonable. For charges to the room, they should easily be able to provide signed receipts but did not do so. Honestly, it feels to us that they will find a way to take more from you than the room fee by any means necessary.

The valet, the afternoon pool attendant, and the morning breakfast servers were all wonderful. Our impression is that the majority of issues stem from the front desk...
