Writing review based on an experience during a one-night stay on 20-21st of March, 2023. Kept delaying the review waiting for a resolution which never happened (took detailed notes at the time which I'm referring to now). It was a typical hotel experience until two guys walked into my room a little before 5am on Sunday morning. They entered using a keycard and turned on the lights, waking me up. They walked over to my belongings scattered on the large desk and were startled when they saw me sit up in bed. One said "oh sh*t someone's in here" and they ran out. Timeline of what followed: 5am (within 10 minutes of incident): Went down to lobby and spoke with Liz at reception and a security guard. Guard quickly goes up an employee stairwell to "check it out". I never saw or spoke to him again. Liz confirmed there were no other keycards issued to my room and informed me that no manager was available to talk to me. She said they would review the cameras on my floor and get back to me. She took my contact info to pass on and I went back to my room (engaging security latch this time). 6am: Called front desk twice from room phone 5 minutes apart. No answer, no call-back. 10am: Came down for checkout. Different employee (I didn't record her name this time) at reception who knew nothing of what had happened earlier. Again was told no manager was available but they would take my contact information again and I would be contacted shortly (SPOILER: I wasn't). Following evening: Still no call from hotel. Called front desk and spoke to Tyler who again knew nothing about the incident (apparently room invasions are a common occurrence here?). I asked if the camera review had been conducted as suggested by Liz. He tells me they don't even have cameras in the hallways. He says he'll do a keycard audit, takes my contact information again and said I would be contacted the next day (SPOILER: I wasn't). Called back a few times in the weeks following (life is busy). Never spoke to a manager despite leaving multiple messages with multiple people. No resolution whatsoever. Conclusion: I believe the staff steals from the rooms of guests they believe are out, probably using an all-access keycard reserved for security/housekeeping/maintenance. I didn't return to my hotel until very late the night of my stay (probably 3am or later) so they likely thought I was still out when they entered. Other reviewers mention things going missing from their rooms (but none indicate they were woken up by intruders). Reception was either in on it or stunningly incompetent. Also possible management received all of my messages and chose not to respond. In any case: ZERO Stars. Avoid...
Read moreOverall there's a lot I enjoyed about my stay at Kimpton La Peer but also areas I really didn't enjoy about it.
Room / Hard Product: Overall, the room is upscale and well-designed. The beds are super plush and comfortable. The covers and sheets are high thread-count and feel comfy while not overheating you. There are a couple points that greatly deviate from making it a great experience: (1) the cheap open-style shower areas are designed by someone who's never used them - water sprays everywhere including onto the outside floor and the shower area never gets warm. I do understand it's more straightforward for housekeeping to clean but it should be kept at select-service Residence Inns and not '5-star' hotels. (2) the rooms feels modern but certain areas are already starting to breakdown - e.g., the flimsy blackout curtain is already very frayed at the edges and feels cheap. The rooms feel empty as they're plenty large-enough to add a lounge seat with a lamp.
Service / Soft Product: Dyanne and Chris at the front desk were so friendly throughout my stay - they are true assets to your team. They always greeted me by name and had a warm smile on their face. The misses came from housekeeping / facilities maintenance. After check-in, we had identified our sink drain control didn't work (once closed, it couldn't be reopened) and it was never fixed throughout our 4-day stay. Housekeeping left a few cleaning supplies throughout (e.g., cleaning cloths) while neglecting to refill items (we were out of lotion multiple days and they never bothered our body wash / conditioner when it ran out).
Amenities: Kimpton La Peer offered some amenities but fell short of a 5-star experience. There's a compact outdoor pool and exercise room, but not big enough if you're looking to get laps in. There's a expansive modern entry-way and great room but little else in terms of common areas. There's no spa and only one restaurant and bar.
Policies: My 1-star rating comes from the horrid amenity fee trend. I really wish the IHG / Kimpton corporate would stop copying trashy Vegas hotels and ripping guests off through charging a daily $46 ‘amenity’ fee for a $15 breakfast credit. Calling yourself a luxury hotel and then charging $46 for a bowl of oatmeal / yogurt is ludicrous. The other ‘amenities’ in the fee are a joke: access to coworking spaces but they’re a 30+ minute drive away, charging for cabana rentals at a mostly-empty pool with no spa, complimentary pickleball… but only in the morning, free wifi and printing (it’s 2025...
Read moreKimpton La Peer is a perfect oasis in the chaos of the evermoving Los Angeles. Arriving as a couple in our late 20s, our primary goal was to explore the city, get the local vibe and have an amazing memorable adventure; and La Peer happened to be at the perfect place to achieve exactly that.
First of all, their style suits well the LA atmosphere combining lax, posh and ambient characters of the city. The hotel lobby presents itself with a modernistic loft style and a simple stoic welcoming station in the heart of it. The valet swiftly collected our ride on the spot and proceeded to deliver our luggages straight to the room. Delicate hostess chirped us through the check-in process, while offering complementary refreshments and acute insights on the regional see-sights and dining options.
We stayed in the King Room with Spa Bath and thoroughly enjoyed the comfort and aesthetic pleasure of the lodging. Remarkably sustained soft loft style with elements of unique artistic attributes that make the boutique hotels so special. Combined shower and spa bath with a matted window into the bedroom create an open layout with a special feeling of extra dimension and expanded volume.
The rest of the amenities follow the suit of high quality and eye-pleasing design. An absolutely fabulous heated pool and a bar with high-quality cocktails (with a spin on the classic recipes) and heating bonfires. There is also a great Italian restaurant onsite, called “Viale dei Romani” that specializes on Italian seafood, but also serves quite a few dishes off the menu (e.g. fantastic pizza).
As for the neighborhood, the hotel is located in one of the most trendy neighborhoods - West Hollywood (WeHo). There are numerous critically acclaimed restaurants just around the corner with our personal favorites: “Gracias Madre” (vegan Mexican), “Cecconi’s” (posh Italian), and “Catch LA” (trendy hangout place). Make sure to get the reservation ahead of time, concierge at the lobby will happily do that for you. For shopping stroll the Melrose Avenue (apparel and design clothing), or see the “Beverly Center” (giant shopping mall). For nightlife check-out the famous Sunset Strip, which features “Chateau Marmont” (celebrity hideaway), and “Whiskey a Go Go” (legendary music venue).
Overall a very pleasant experience and we will make sure to...
