We came in for the Berks Jazzfest Friday April 8th for a 3 night stay. Upon check in I could see there were problems at the front desk as the line was backed up. Once I reached the counter, I was told there were not enough clean rooms at that time and there would be a short wait. We waited in the breakfast room and Miriam, the reservationist, came over to us to complete the check in process after about a 10 minute wait. Kudos to Miriam.
The room was adequate albeit a tiny bathroom and the sink outside the bathroom. I'm not a fan of that. But the room was decent nonetheless. I have to say for a busy weekend, the hotel was pretty sound, save for a few people talking loudly while walking through the hallways.
My only problem and complaint is with housekeeping. 2 Thumbs down! When we came back to our room after the first day out, I could see the floor was not vacuumed and the bed was haphazardly made and the pillows were put back on the bed in a sloppy manner. The blanket was more on the floor than on the bed, so we fixed that..
Day two. As we are leaving our room, we see the housekeeper down the hall and she asks if we were checking out. I told her no. She had us checking out and then said "oh you are a stay over". I explained to her I had two separate reservations because I used reward points for the first two nights, but didn't have enough points for the third night so I made a separate reservation but requested to stay in the same room (room 421). Which, by the way, I had to stop at the front desk to check in again for the Sunday reservation. Anyway, the housekeeper asked us if we needed anything and I gave her my request. She rode the elevator down with us to go on her smoke break and was very pleasant. Well, I guess the smoke and tobacco clouded her brain because when we returned from our day out, the room was totally unclean. The bed was not made, towels still in the tub, trash can overflowing. The housekeeper totally forgot to clean the room. Wow. It wouldn't have been so bad if we hadn't actually TALKED to the woman on our way out!
I called the front desk and was told there was nobody available and that I could bring the used towels down and pick up fresh ones. My husband did that. The front desk clerk was apologetic. But this really annoyed us. Upon check out Monday, I really wished the reservationist had asked me how our stay was because I would have told her exactly what I am writing here.
All in all, the stay was fine. The hot breakfast was good, baked cookies daily...all good. Horrible horrible housekeeping! The last thing I want to have to do on vacation is make the bed, replenish towels and take out the trash! Maybe smoke breaks should be allowed only after all rooms are cleaned. Would I stay here...
Read moreI entered the lobby a little past 3 pm, which is technically the check-in time. There was absolutely no one behind the desk, and no bell to ring either. So I went and sat down on the lobby couch. After about 5 min, a man came out behind his desk staring at me the whole time but did not greet me once. He had his phone in shooting position for video, and he was aiming it somewhat towards me, so I didnt know what he was doing and whether he was filming me. As I walk over I asked him if he was filming me and he said no, he was filming his computer. This rude, strange man turns out to be their front desk agent. (I also later noticed there are no surveillance camera's anywhere on the property which is weird for a hotel).
I then received an unpleasant surprise during check-in when a $50 incidental deposit was requested. Nowhere in the booking did it state that a deposit was required. When I asked the receptionist behind the counter why this was not made known to me in advance, he did not have a good answer. The reservation was apparently processed directly via the daysinn site, he even admitted that. And yet this was not made clear to me in advance. I didn't have a problem with paying the $50 or the principle behind paying a deposit, but I did have a problem with the fact that it was asked somewhat in a shady way.
My biggest argument was that someone could have possibly come to the hotel without the $50 because they didn't know about it. The clerk said if someone didn't pay the $50 they would be turned away. I then said that no one comes all the way to a hotel to be turned away, that that is not nice, and the receptionist responded by saying "we turn people away all the time".
In addition, he said that the $50 incidentals deposit will become $100 in July.
The room had no hot water for most of the day, only for about 5 minutes very late at night and the toilet did not flush like the first 5 times, and then very weakly and moderately, where you had to use a very precise amount of force and pressing time on the flush handle to make it work. The tub had yellow markings near the drain hole like rust or paint. The bathroom floor had chipped tile and one outlet in the room was wobbly.
I was not bothered by other guests or noise, but the breakfast was very meager and poor. The room came with only one bar of soap. The location is great, with all kinds of shops and businesses within walking distance, and I could easily get items delivered from Walmart. So that's another plus. Apparently this hotel is as 'poor' as the clientele it...
Read moreUpdated - Nov/2024 - We made a return visit and I am sad to say, it was not great. I have reduced this from a 4 star to a 2 star. The staff continued to be friendly and okay, although the lady at the desk seemed a bit tired after a long over night shift. The room was clean. The bed was very worn out. The pillows were improved and nice. The shower was weak and not really that hot. The TV was better. The room on the second floor was quite noisy from the highway. Both my wife and I checked the windows to see if it was somehow open as the traffic noise was so loud. Breakfast offering was pitiful and the coffee had a burned taste. I wonder if they have long term stays that tend to fill up on the breakfast offerings so they limit what they have out? The entire hotel seemed to be a bit more dirty with trash and such. We will not come back. Here is my original review - This is listed as a 2-star hotel on Maps, so we were a bit wary, but the location and price were right, so we gave it a go. This is right off the busy 422 and a very easy on and off the expressway. It is a busy commercial area with restaurants and shopping just across the street. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was a bit dated, but mostly clean. (We discovered a food smear on the fridge that was really dried on and it took some scrubbing to remove it.) We were on the 4th floor with a view of 422 and the highway noise was constant in the background but not horrible. The TV offered the normal channels, but it was a fuzzy (not horrible but not great) picture and the sound kept going off from the picture, so it was like watching a badly dubbed B-movie most of the time. The bed was firm but the pillows were the lightly stuffed bags of fluff pillows that hotels love to use. I guess that wash well? Breakfast was not great, or good, or fair. It was basically some slices of bread for toast, packaged muffins (1 out of 2 days), snack bars, coffee, juice, etc. Basically a 2-star hotel breakfast. This is at best a overnight, we are on-our-way-home stay, or for the business traveler. If we were in the area in the future, we would likely consider staying here again.. The Plaza Azteca Mexican restaurant across the street...
