It really wasn't a good experience. The cashier lady who could speak chinese, english and Japanese was VERY unwelcoming. I came 30mins before my booked timeslot and politely asked for permission to start my kimono rental earlier. Which would have been totally fine if they turned me away and asked me to come back later instead. But the cashier lady very reluctantly invited me in and immediately asked me to pay up with a really monotonous tone and annoyed expression. She talked to me as though I owed them my life and threw instructions at me on what time I need to be back etc. Her attitude carried on even when I was selecting the kimonos. When I was getting changed, my friend (who can speak fluent Japanese) was waiting outside when he overheard the cashier lady complaining to the other staff in Japanese about how I came early. I've only gotten really bad customer service from her so I don't know if she's the same lady that everyone was giving good reviews for. The only time she ever talks to me is when its regarding money, and she was very unpolite about it.
The 2 Japanese ladies who dressed me up did a good job and were very polite throughout the entire process. They also tried to make small talk in English and were just very welcoming in general.
Personally, I had a much better experience with Maikoya at Gion. You just pay ABIT more to have an authentic tea ceremony in a an actual olden tea house, wagashi making and they allow you to walk around in their kimonos afterwards. You only need to return at 6pm as well. Superb service and really close to kiyomizu dera. It's really just a better deal, and they probably set my expectations...
Read moreLOVEEE this location. Trying on a kimono has always been one of the must-dos on my list in Japan. I have been to the Tokyo Asakusa location last year when I visited Tokyo and I absolutely fell in love. This year, I am headed to Kyoto while I am in the Kansai area and wanted to experience kimono again. I was thrilled when I found that aiwafuku has a location just minutes away from fushimi inari. The price here is reasonable: with hair styling included. They also store your luggage for you while you explore Kyoto in their beautiful kimono. I had the chance to try on a Yukata as it was september and the summer heat was still pretty strong. The Ladies who helped me put on my kimono were the cutest and gave me recommendation in terms of colors/hair style/etc. Like the other location: they make a post card for you with your picture when you return your kimono. I was...
Read moreRented our kimono and yukata here after doing my research online. Booked my reservation for 9am to beat the crowd at the shrine. A day of rental was just nice for Fushimi-inari shrine, yasaka shrine and kiyo-mizu dera temple. If rushed abit, it is possible to make it for tokufu-ji too. Remember to reserve online at least a day before hand for cheaper price. Also, student price applies to foreign students(including university/college) as long as you brought student card with you. As the female plan includes hairstyle price, it is cheaper than those 3000yen rentals, as they charge extra for hairstyle. A small Japanese hand pouch that suits our kimono/yukata style was also provided for each person to hold...
