The last time my wife and went to Arashiyama, we took the train from Kyoto station to Saga-Arashiyama station and then walked. But on the way back, I noticed there was this "romantic train" called the Randen line. When I explored it this time arounnore of a commuter tramline than a railway. And it also ends up in the middle of Arashiyama town so not so much of a walk.

The Randen line starts from Shijo-Omiya station so we made our way there in the morning; tickets from the window (no vending machine) then boarded. You drop off your tickets on the way out. This is truly a commuter tram line. Lots of character and very enjoyable to take the tram on the same roads as cars, etc., then it gets its own tracks once it heads out of the city.

It ends at Arashimaya station; that's the one that's in the Kimono forest. Then the crowds start 🤣 Which is good or bad; can follow the crowds to the...

Shijo-Omiya Station is such a convenient starting point for exploring Arashiyama. The Randen line connects directly from Kyoto city center, making it really easy and stress-free to get there. The ride itself is pretty quick and affordable, and the station is simple to navigate. Perfect if you’re planning a day trip to Arashiyama without the hassle—highly recommend...

It is IMHO a more interesting option compared to the train line from Kyoto station. The tram is the old fashion rickety street tram that traverses through local streets. So if you aren’t pressed for time, this route is highly...
