A Dream Spot for Record Lovers & Old-School DJs! As an old-school DJ with thousands of records in my collection, I’ve spent the past few months searching all over Japan for serious record shops, and HMV Record Shop in Shibuya absolutely delivered.
There are actually two HMV locations in the Shibuya area, but this one stood out for me. The first HMV shop is located inside a shopping mall and goes up two floors, which might be a bit of a hassle logistically if you’re hauling a large load of vinyl. But the second HMV, the one right on the street, is a game-changer.
Accessibility is key for anyone with crates of records, and I appreciated that coin parking is conveniently located just around the corner. No long walks or escalators, just straight from the car to the shop.
This store itself is huge and incredibly well-organized. The first floor is full of Japanese music, from J-Pop to Enka. Head upstairs and you’ll find a goldmine of American records hip-hop, R&B, classic rock, jazz, and more. Their second floor is where I spent most of my time, and I was impressed with the depth of their selection.
Even better: I recently contributed over 1,000 records from my personal collection, and I feel great knowing they’ve found a home here where music lovers can discover them again.
If you’re a collector, a former DJ like me, or just someone with a love for vinyl, this HMV Record Shop is definitely...

I don't know much about vinyl, as I only went in to pick some records up for a friend back home, but it seems like it'd be quite a collection to browse if it your kind of thing.
The store is bright and open, with space to browse and move about. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and found me the records I was after immediately. I'd of been there for hours without their help!
Definitely worth checking out if you're in Shibuya and you enjoy records both old and new.
Edit 11/03/24: Visited again today. And although the store is still lovely, the staff member we asked for help was quite abrupt and uninterested. A stark contrast to our last visit. Hopefully it's just a one off, and doesn't...
Read moreVery disappointing store. TONS of vinyl but all easily 2X the price you’ll pay in any of the dozen Disk Union stores spread out thru Tokyo. Even RecoFan has far more realistic & reasonable prices, and they get slogged off by some for being overpriced!
I go to Tokyo annually to buy vinyl, and for 3 years in a row I’ve wasted my time checking them out, hoping they would improve. Guess I’m just a slow learner.
If you are in Shibuya and only have time to visit 3 record stores, make it the Disk Union Shibuya #1, RecoFan Shibuya #2, and save the time on the 3rd store for...
