Kyoouji [or Kyoo-ji] Temple is a temple of Nichiren Sect of Buddhism in Japan. The temple appears to be involved in the so-called Battle of Ueno of new Meiji Government in 1868 when Meiji Government defeated Tokugawa Bakufu [or shogunate military government], the final Bakufu/ shogun military government in Japanese history because it seems that shogun forces did take refuge in the temple until they were almost all killed. Visitors of the temple can see bullet-hole marks at the Temple’s Entrance Gate, and the Temple does document the historical event in bi-lingual near the Entrance Gate. Like many other temples in Nippori area, the Temple has quite a large space is graveyard for the famous historical figures of the past. The best time to visit the temple is probably April to May when its purple wisteria flowers blossom. The Temple is free for entrance.

明治維新の少し前の慶応四年に官軍が江戸に到達したとき、勝海舟と西郷隆盛により江戸城の無血開城が決まっていたが、それを受け入れられない一部の幕臣達が上野寛永寺にて兵を挙げた。

官軍と幕臣（彰義隊）が寛永寺の黒門で激突し上野戦争が始まった。これがのちに上野戦争とよばれた。 圧倒的な官軍に押された彰義隊の武士は上野の山から逃げ出しこの日暮里方面にもやってきてこの経王寺に立てこもりこの寺の山門で一戦を交えた。

その時の官軍の鉄砲から発射された銃弾の痕が今も山門の板塀に残っている。（写真）

コンパクトな山門だ。 多くの観光客がぞろぞろと私の後ろを谷中銀座方面に歩いて行くが、目の前に見え始めた「夕焼けだんだん」に目を取られ、だれもこの寺には寄る様子はない。（写真） 近くで見ると板塀を銃弾が突き抜けている。（写真）

約１５０年前に逃げてきた彰義隊の兵士と官軍の兵士がこの山門で戦いを交えたのは間違いないだろうが、その戦いがどのようなものだったかは何も残っていないので推測するしかない。
