This Sanrio in Higashiikebukuro feels like stepping into a pastel-powered vortex of consumer joy. The moment you walk in, you’re hit with an avalanche of Hello Kitty, My Melody & Cinnamoroll staring at you with those perfectly symmetrical eyes...calculated cuteness, like Disney but with more weaponized bows & blushing cheeks.
The store isn’t massive, but it’s dense. Floor-to-ceiling racks of pouches, pens, plushies & enough pink accessories to make Barbie look minimalist. Shoppers weren’t just browsing...they were on missions. Middle-aged couples debating over tote bags, teenagers clutching Kuromi keychains like stock options & tourists trying to figure out how many Kitty coin purses can realistically fit in a carry-on without TSA assuming you’ve got a side hustle in kawaii smuggling.
What’s wild is how efficient the whole thing feels. Despite the crowd, there’s a kind of polite intensity...everyone here knows this stuff sells out & you don’t want to be the poor bastard who waits too long only to miss the last Little Twin Stars thermos.
If you want to understand the economic concept of “inelastic demand,” stand inside this place for five minutes. Sanrio doesn’t sell merch; they sell serotonin disguised...

On May 22, a new product was released. I started lining up before the store opened and waited for 45 minutes, being the second in line. After the store opened, people from behind rushed in, and the staff didn't maintain order. As a result, two Japanese people behind me grabbed the Hello Kitty keychain I was holding. Shouldn't we buy products in the order we lined up?
After this incident, the overweight store clerk was the most discriminatory against foreigners I have ever seen. She didn't address the people who didn't follow the rules but blamed me for causing trouble to others just because I am a foreigner. It's really ridiculous. I followed the rules, lined up honestly for 45 minutes, and was second in line. There were no staff members maintaining order, and I had to fight for the product with the people behind me, only to be blamed by the overweight clerk.
I have filed a complaint with Sanrio, asking them to check the surveillance footage and for the overweight clerk to apologize to me. I am waiting for Sanrio's response. Avoid this store's overweight clerk. There is a lot of unfairness towards foreigners in Japan, and it is really difficult...
