Commentary to accompany the photos: Across the street and a bit to the South West of the Yamaha Ginza building is Shiseido the Store (cosmetics). The horizontal arrow indicates the start of this exposition. The red star is the approximate location of the shrine and the vertical red arrow indicates the entrance from the alley behind the block. If you walk down the side street to the end of the Shiseido building, you will come upon a stone plinth next to a walkway. Toyoiwa Inari {fox] Shrine. The walkway between the buildings is clean but quickly becomes dark and foreboding. I raise the Phial of Galadriel (turn on the flash on my camera) and proceed cautiously with and eye for giant spiders. An abrupt right turn causes me to look back longingly at the sunlight before I bravely proceed. A left turn leads to a slightly wider passage (with a parked bicycle). A final left to discover the cramped precincts of the shrine. The poor guardian foxes are covered in COVID hand grease from worshipers unable to resist pawing the statues in the confined space. This picture from July 2023. By January 2024, the foxes were sporting vermilion bibs with an appliqué along the lower hem. The shrine's name plate. A bell to attract the attention of the gods. A donors' registry. Pretty good repair of a muzzle fracture. A line of lanterns 'light' the way to the shrine from the alley entrance. without flash From the alleyway, a dark and foreboding opening. The entrance off the alley is a little more obviously a Shinto shrine. The nobori (flags) proudly...

If you ever find yourself in Ginza, wallet bleeding from Uniqlo purchases and overpriced iced lattes, slip down this alleyway shrine for a reset. This shrine is wedged so tightly between buildings that I honestly thought I’d discovered Narnia, but with less Turkish Delight and more fox gods in adorable bibs.

Walking through feels like sneaking into the spiritual backend of Tokyo – it’s narrow enough that if you breathe out too hard, you might knock over a lantern. But that’s the beauty of it: a tiny, quiet pocket of reverence in the middle of capitalist chaos.

I half-expected the fox statues to whisper stock tips as I rang the bell, because if any Shinto deity knows the market, it’s the fox god guarding Ginza real estate. Pro tip: if you’re tall, mind your head on the lanterns – the gods here might bless you with luck, but they’re not handing out free...
