I attended two classes (total of 8 days) at Fair Cake. I traveled from Turkey to London in order to attend. It was a big investment for me. I did learn quite a bit but honestly there were things about the owner that did not make my experience very pleasant. First off, I think the owner Shikhita is very unprofessional. She barely walked around the room while we were independently working to check on us and ask us if we needed help. She was too busy making her son's birthday cake while she was supposed to be assisting us at the class we PAID for. If she wasn't busy with her son's cake, she was on her phone constantly updating her Instagram account. I don't remember her smiling at me once. She was also very defensive about students recording her while she made flowers or showed us certain techniques. Of course we are going to want to record certain techniques! Some of us are there for over a week and have class from 10AM-5PM! It's not humanly possible to remember everything she shows us without recording bits of it. She was "afraid we would put it on YouTube." No one travels all that way, pays money and spends their whole day in a workshop just to put your videos on YouTube, Shikhita. Everyone is trying to get the most out of their money and experience. I don't think the recording should be that big of a deal and it's not fair because now that I look back on it, I don't remember a lot of the small details that she wouldn't let us record. Writing it down is not the same as seeing it! Another thing that really stroke me as unprofessional was the fact that she bad mouthed someone that left her a bad review. I'm sure she will now talk about me in her classes to her other students since I am speaking the truth on here. She has to learn to accept the fact that her unprofessional behavior is not acceptable when people are traveling and paying for her services. She defended herself against the negative comment and told people to "get over" the fact that she has a son at home and leaves at 5:00 on the dot leaving no room for questions after the class. If you have responsibilities then choose a different time for classes, it's not paying customers fault that your nanny leaves at 5:00. I spoke to a couple of other students when we had lunch together and they felt the same way about her unprofessional behavior. We had two guest decorators at the end of each class and they were very pleasant. They walked around, didn't mind being photographed or taken on camera. Overall, I learned quite a bit but the environment was not friendly or professional and to be honest, if I knew this was going to be the case I would have taken my...
Read moreI had a really enjoyable experience at Fair Cake on the six day modern wedding cake class. How people rate the course will reflect what the individual wants to get out the six days, so bear that in mind when reading reviews. For me, I wanted to brush up quickly on modern wedding cakes and it seemed obvious that I would learn far more in a live class that watching videos or trying to fit some practice in around my usual commitments. The class certainly ticked all the boxes for me. I have come away with the confidence to launch a new range of wedding cakes with gusto! Shikita and her lovely assistant Agnes ( they are quite a duo) certainly know a thing or two about cakes and were happy to share their knowledge and skills generously. Laura who taught two out of the six days was AWESOME. While it is not essential to have worked with sugarpaste before, to get the very most out of an intense six day course I would recommend that you at least familiarise yourself with some basics. I would say that if you don't have much experience then one of the two day courses would be an excellent way to start and then you could move on to the six day course. From time to time I have a "cakey day" by attending a course. I really enjoy meeting fellow cakers and the week at Fair Cake was one the best. We had a terrific bunch of students (who can forget Rami the slightly bonkers Finnish chef or Lola who will forever be remembered as the hexagonal cake queen). We all had a lovely time...
Read moreAttending the âButtercream Flowersâ cake decorating course was an absolute delight! Uma is a wonderfully lovely lady, brought not just her expertise but also patience and thoroughness to the session. Her approach to teaching is both inspiring and encouraging, making complex techniques seem achievable for decorators at any level.
What stood out to me was the depth of knowledge shared throughout the course. The hands-on session was incredibly valuable, offering us ample opportunity to refine our skills under her attentive guidance.
The course was structured in a way that built our confidence step by step. Starting from the basics, we gradually moved to more intricate designs, learning not just how to create beautiful flowers but also how to arrange them artistically on cakes.
By the end of the course, I was amazed at how much I had learned. I left feeling equipped with the skills and confidence to create stunning buttercream flowers on my own. This course is a must for anyone looking to elevate their cake decorating skills. I cannot recommend it highly enough â an educational and enjoyable experience from start to finish!
