We were honored and excited to have our film selected by New Jersey Horror-Con, but upon arrival we were severely disappointed. When we arrived at the hotel, it was incredibly disorganized. The event consisted of two parts: the screening room where the festival was being held, and the convention area.
The convention area was filled to the brim with different types of vendors, some of which bared no relation to the horror theming of the event. There was one specifically that was just a man showing his own Youtube videos which consistent of commentary over video games. This was the first thing you saw upon entering, and is also where you received your “passes”. As filmmakers with a project in the festival, we were given free passes to the event. These ended up being a simple wristband, the same as everyone else who paid for admittance. I wish there was more attention to what was given to the filmmakers, as I am used to receiving a lanyard with a badge indicating my name, role, and project.
We asked where the festival was taking place, and they gave us very vague directions. They told us to follow the signage which there was little. The room where the festival was being held was on the complete opposite side of the hotel (which was a very large hotel). There was very little signage, and we had to ask multiple people where it was. Upon entering the festival room, I was absolutely shocked to see the “theater” set-up. It consisted of a small 84” projector screen, and no more than 20 folding chairs in the middle of a rather large event room. It looked very absurd. There was one piece of paper taped to a pole near the entrance detailing the film schedule. That was the only one we saw. The entirety of the time we were there, there were never more than 4 people in the room. There was not even a person there to introduce films, hold Q&As, host. There were what looked like three high school kids just pressing play on a laptop without saying a single word. During one of the films, they repeatedly walked past the screen. The whole thing lacked any sense of professionalism
I cannot say this for certain, but it would not surprise me if the festival aspect of the convention exists simply to make additional money through the film submission fees. It felt like the event planners made no true effort to promote and push people to see the films. I am incredibly frustrated to have paid the submission fee for my film to be screened in an empty, distant side room with where you could barely hear the audio over the sounds of the arcade and bowling happening right outside the door. I asked family members to take time out of their weekend to come to the festival in support of the film. If I had known that this was what was in store, I would have just sent them a link to the film and saved everyone the hours spent driving. Don’t bother submitting to New Jersey Horror-Con until they begin treating the festival and filmmakers with...
Read moreWe enjoyed the New Jersey Horror Con to some degree except for an unfortunate incident that we had at the Butch Patrick ( Eddie Munster) booth. We paid $40.00 for an 8 x 10 photo with the four of us and Mr. Patrick standing in front of the coffin hot rod that was featured on the Munsters series. Prior to paying the photographer, we asked him if he would email us the photo file so that we can print our own photos. The photographer reluctantly agreed, so we had him take the photo and gave him an email address to send the photo file. We received the 8 x 10 photo and was advised that he will email us the photo file after the show was over that day. We never received any photo file email from Patrick's photographer, Butch Patrick or his associates.. We would have never purchased the $40.00 8 x 10 photo had we known that this Butch Patrick crew had no intentions to send the photo file...We are very disappointed with the dishonesty we experienced with the photographer and Mr. Patrick and associated . We are so upset with this incident that we will not attend any future Horror Cons . It is just not worth the aggravation in dealing with such...
