After living here for nearly a year things are rapidly beginning to fall apart. Although I love my apartment, my neighbors, and the amenities, there's clearly zero concern for security and no followup on criminal incidents aside from placating emails.
My car - on the 5th floor, far beyond the "security gate" - was broken into along with a couple of other cars. That's not me being careless and leaving my car unlocked, that's me trying to go to work in the morning but my car is missing a window. Although our unit is on the second floor the "security fence" in the public access stairwell doesn't begin until the 3rd floor meaning anyone can waltz in through guest parking and march right up to us... guess we should have paid more for a higher floor for that security feature. Beyond that other residents have continually addressed break-in issues with the parking garage based storage units but I couldn't be grifted into the exorbitant fee to use one.
More recently, the pads used to access the building in that same stairwell were removed from the wall (presumably from another criminal). Ok - vandalism happens and that's all fine and good but rather than the locks defaulting to locked they are WIDE OPEN for ANYONE who wants to come steal things. Let's not forget the fact that the apartment charges you money for the LUXURY of not having your apartment automatically lock when you leave (no real keys, just fobs) so in the event that you forget your fob they are making money one way or the other. Come on down to 10727 Domain Drive for free items from a "luxury" apartment! Don't worry about that security mesh for the higher class floors that I couldn't afford that was also broken but has yet to be fixed..
I pay more than a mortgage for something I will never own ($1,750) and management has nothing to say other than a fancy lobby and a "sorry about that". The lobby smells nice and it's absolutely gorgeous... but you don't keep the entirety of your life in the lobby.
But don't worry, there are speakers in the ceilings of each unit and there's a nice pool that you can rarely use!
When I toured my specific unit my leasing agent mentioned that I might "notice" garbage collection once per week.... they show up every morning at 6-7am and it's the loudest thing I've ever heard at such a time.. they built a nice concrete pen for the dumpsters so they aren't on the street but it's still absurdly loud, every day, and at the crack of dawn.
I could continue on to address how the trash collection is inadequate and how the trash chute is usually clogged and how the trash chute rooms just pile up with garbage and how people take their dogs for walks in the parking garage and let them pee in the elevators and just outside the elevators but that's really not the focus of this review.
I was absolutely smitten when I signed and all has been well until recently.. but Greystar has some...
Read moreOriginal Post below was 10 months ago as of edits on 2/11/21. Since then the management chose not to address the robbery issues by installing cameras (or even fake ones) and just a few weeks ago there was another string of robberies and management just sent an email reminding people to report to the police and they're not responsible. Not to mention the countless packages that go missing from the package room which people post on the community board about all of the time.
OG Post: It's a shame how poorly managed this place is because the finishes are really the nicest in the area as far as apartments go.
That being said, I've lived here for 6 months and have been robbed twice now. The first time, my storage unit was broken into and several thousand dollars items were taken. Although apparently this happened to several others in the community, the management office chose not to proactive reach out to residents and instead we found out by going to visit our unit one day and seeing that it was ransacked. We were told that they only informed residents who had visible damage to their units (obviously to save face).
Just today, we discovered that our (locked) vehicle has been broken into and the contents stolen. When I expressed my concern and anger to the leasing agent, she asked if I wanted to get started on my lease termination paperwork.
These robots have no semblance of decency or humanity. I can't wait to get out of here.
SAVE YOUR MONEY.
PS - walls are paper thin
Update as of 2/11/21: It has only gotten worse here at the flatiron. Dog piss everywhere, including the hallways, garages, elevators. Residents actually encourage their male dogs to pee on the corners in the parking garages. It's disgusting. And there are GIANT piles of dog poo all over the lawns outside of the property even though there are plenty of bags and waste stations. People who live here are downright dirty and gross.
Walls are still paper thin. I am top floor but every time someone walks down the hallway it sounds like a heard of elephants. I couldn't imagine living here with people above me.
Fire alarm situation has gotten better. They were going off randomly a lot for a bit which was great for my fearful dog (and taking calls from home) but that seems to have subsided.
I've noticed that the property manager likes to respond to complains and throw the fact that people renewed their lease as some sort of proof that this place isn't so bad. We renewed our lease due to the housing crisis and once we have a new home, we will gladly pay the $5k to terminate. Can't wait actually. Please stop with the condescending tone, it really isn't helping your overall look.
The people who really deserve to be celebrated here are the cleaning and maintenance teams. They are absolutely amazing, patient, responsive, and kind. If I could reallocate every leasing agents salary to one of...
Read moreI lived at Flat Iron Late 2021 into Mid 2022 as my first entrance into Austin and can second a lot of what the other reviews mentioned. Both the good and the bad.
The good: Location is great, amenities are on par with what you would expect at this price point in Austin, staff is friendly, and the lobby was always cool to walk into. It's also in Domain without being in the thick of Domain, which was a good balance for me. And now that I've been in Austin longer and lived other places, I have an appreciation for Domain and that part of town (it's newer, cleaner, less homeless in that area, etc).
Things to watch out for, first off....your things. I also had decor stolen, packages go missing, and my car backed into without any notes left. Seems like at that $$ point, they should at least have more cameras in the hallways and garage areas to help with this. Other than that, the thing you deal with almost daily is noise from neighbors. FlatIron has wooden construction between the floors, so your downstairs neighbors will likely hear every step you make, as will you for the neighbors above you. My upstairs neighbor didn't ever seem like she was being intentionally loud or doing anything other than a normal person would, but it still sounded like a horse in high heels lived above me (full disclosure: I never actually saw this neighbor, so it's possible that's actually what was going on?). Similarly, I always felt like I was being cautious walking around the apartment because I wanted to be respectful of those below me.
That's a common thing in a lot of newer buildings and some are way worse than FlatIron, but just a heads up. Does seem like if they're building luxury apartments from scratch to rent out at those price points, they should thicken the floors and add sound...
