Adela's Hair Studio — Local services in Boston

I rarely go to post reviews, but this one was really hard and messed my photoshoot experience I had planned for weeks and months. Adela gave me a 9am appointment for 10/19. On the day, I waited at the studio doorstep for 15min - knocking and calling and leaving voicemail. I was regretting not taking the offer from Luxor or Avanti to come over and started looking for alternatives. I received a call back at 9:18am from Adela that she slept over (I get it. We are only human!) Adela mentioned she could be there in 20min, and I said “okay, I will wait!” At about 9:48am (after 30min) a man came running on the steps, opened the studio, and said “he will do my hair”. When I asked him, how long would you take, so I could plan with my husband for pickup and inform the photographer of potential delay, he replied “I’m not a factory worker, it may take 3days. I can only say once it’s done.” I still sat on the chair holding my calm, at their mercy to do my hair, as I had no option at that hour. At checkout, he not only demanded a full but a higher than originally committed price of $55. (I was hoping they’ll give do a waiver or a generous discount considering all the hassle they had led me into) I returned home finding myself hurrying with my breakfast, in harsh mood that not only delayed my shoot but also the planned experience.

I recently visited to inquire about Balayage, and while I was hoping to see examples of the owner’s past work, he mentioned that he doesn't keep a portfolio, as it’s "beneath him". I understand that every stylist has their own approach, but I personally value seeing examples before making a decision, especially given that I have naturally black, untouched hair and am cautious about maintaining its health. When I mentioned my hair's natural state, he seemed skeptical, assuming I’d colored it before. As someone who donates my hair regularly and hasn’t dyed it in over five years, I found this a bit surprising. Much more than perfect! I was really worried about having my hair taken care of by someone else than my regular hairdresser of 15 years. I visited many Hair Studios and only the lady at the Adela’s hair made me feel comfortable. Her name is Maiara Alban and she’s SO PERFECT!
