Read moreWent out of my way to try this place for the first time, based on the high reviews. The barber gave me a stunningly bad haircut. In the days following the cut, it has literally made me laugh out loud and I wonder what he was thinking.
This salon knows the traditional “Asian” hairstyles. This stylist was not creative outside of that and certainly not responsive to specific requests that are not typical. I got a very classic, traditional bob for an Asian woman, which was not what I asked for. I showed reference pictures which the barber glanced at for maybe one second before stating that he knew exactly what I wanted.
It is especially funny because he said he was glad I asked for a short cut because then he could show his skill. (This makes me laugh.) he does not work with natural hair texture. He thinned out my hair so that the ends looked like straw sticking out. He did not touch up the ends. He methodically gave me three uniform layers all over- three horizontal cuts for each layer. I expect better attention to detail especially from someone working with Asian hair. By the end, the haircut fell flat, sort of just hanging around my face. This is the same mistake white hairstylists make on Asian hair.
I told him I didn’t like it and he said I could fix it by getting a perm… first of all, this could be prevented by the start by listening carefully to the client and not assuming. Second, I didn’t come in wanting a perm and I said i was looking for a low maintenance cut… obviously this is not an acceptable solution. The solution is a better haircut! :) but ummm yeah obviously I won’t be returning.
I have chosen to leave out the name of the...
Read moreLucas T. IS THE MAN! I went into Coco Head on Veterans Day Friday after having lunch with a friend at a chinatown eatery, where I saw a young man with purple toned silver hair. I've been wanting to dye my hair silver for some time now, and just decided today was the day.
After lunch, My friend and I strolled over to Coco Head on her recommendation. We walked in, and Lucas was sitting at the host stand. I asked if they could dye my hair silver, and he said "of course, sure, When did you want to come in?" When I responded - "Uh I know the chances are slim, but how about right now? I'm in a mood to be spontaneous". Lucas looked at the schedule and said, "Ok, I can do it right now, and directed me to a chair, where he started combing and looking at my hair - assessing his gameplan.
The whole way, Lucas was really great, asking if I've ever done my hair like this, and upon my letting him know that I tried bleaching my own hair once, but never really did anything like this - he was awesome at letting me know what to expect/when it might tingle/that a huge chunk-o-stuff that came off of my scalp while he combed was cotton and not in fact my hair.
Lucas was also talkative, but not cumbersome with his conversation. He was engaged but not a pest, and was sure to make certain I was comfortable while there - even getting me a cup of water at one point. He also went on to take other clients, and other than one brief stint where I wondered if he had forgotten me, he was great at checking back in to see how my hair was progressing.
The hair turned out great, and I will definitely be going back to see...
