I hate to leave a negative review for a business (check my profile) but I feel my experience warrants it. I went into the Wild Duck on Washington St with my friend to buy a bottle of Aperol for a dinner party.
My friend went up to pay. The cost displayed on the register showed the normal price for the bottle ($26.99). Great. But then the credit card terminal showed an elevated price of $28.06. ($1.07 extra?)
My friend asked the cashier if this extra fee was tax the cashier said "yes." My friend grudgingly stuck his card in the machine and paid and we walked out.
After we left the store, upon further inspection, the receipt showed that this fee was stealthily added to the transaction at the last minute (and not disclosed) because my friend used his credit card. My friend has cash on hand and would have used that had he known about the fee.
More specifically, the receipt listed this fee as a non-cash "adjustment" which is not legal under MA law. According to General Law Section 28A. (a)(1) "No seller in any sales transaction may impose a surcharge on a cardholder who elects to use a credit card in lieu of payment by cash, check or similar means."
So, anyway, we went in to confront the business owner. My friend was obviously not pleased but we pled our case. The owner pointed to a small sign that said there was a 4% fee for credit cards. We demanded a refund. After a lengthy discussion and threatening to dispute the charge, the owner said it was "not worth his time" and agreed to refund, sell my friend the bottle with cash (no fee) and credit him the illegal credit card fee that had originally been imposed. Victory.
My friend paid him with a $100 dollar bill and he was complaining that my friend was taking all of his register change.
A man at a nearby register agreed with my friend - expressing solidarity as he was purchasing his six-pack and jokingly asked if he was in the "cash line" - he evidently knew about this grift.
Despite a less than optimal experience I am still inclined to award 3 stars stars because, when confronted, the seller agreed to make it right, however I thought it my ethical obligation to warn others about what...
Read moreI honestly hate leaving bad reviews, but my experience at Wild Duck Liquor was so immature and unprofessional that I feel people should be warned. The cashier who rang me out acted in a way that reminded me of other reviews I’ve seen here: dismissive, rude, and completely unreasonable. They questioned a valid, in-date ID for no reason, and the way it was handled was incredibly unprofessional. Instead of treating customers with respect, they doubled down and made the entire situation uncomfortable and humiliating.
I’ve been to plenty of stores, and I’ve never encountered behavior this immature. There are too many other liquor stores in the area to put up with that kind of treatment. I won’t be...
Read moreI really, really hate to leave bad reviews and this is actually the first I’ve ever written, but the experience was so bad I feel like I have to warn people. Just like other reviews have said, the owner(?) refused her VALID, IN DATE license for no reason. He said it’s definitely fake (it wasn’t) and said that he was not giving it back and that she can get it back from the cops. She told him to call them then since that is her real ID and she needs it! Once he realized she wasn’t lying because she agreed to call the cops, he said fine give it back but no sale. Crazy rude. At least the poor cashier felt...
