In Your Ear had been my go-to record store for a long time, and I was very upset when they closed. I’d been trying to find my new spot and told my wife that the best “real” record stores were holes in the wall and that I didn’t want to shop in a boutique where hipsters are lurking only on Record Store Day (I guess this makes me a record store snob snob?) I wanted a dump and absolutely found my place with Looney Tunes. The first step into the store is a little overwhelming- there is just stuff EVERYWHERE. I’m a big guy and was worried about knocking over stacks of records then having to wait for a St. Bernard to come dig me out. I thought about heading for the hills, but realized that my tetanus shots were up to date and my life insurance was paid up- so, I sucked in my gut and decided to take a chance. I’m very glad I did. This store has a remarkable selection of items across all genres. I’m assuming it was the owner I spoke to and he was outgoing, knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor. I dug out a few great finds that were priced right. I would give this place 100 stars if I could and can’t...
Read moreThe coolest record shop... anywhere... During our recent visit to Boston, we happen to stay in Allston, and while walking around saw a goofy sign for a record store. Followed the signs to the basement space, start digging around displays and bins and boxes, and wow, started to find some cool stuff. And then I asked Patrick a question... About an hour later ww walked out of the store with a dozen records, half of which I would never find on my own, and most of which were very good. Next day, before leaving the area, we had to go back again, and after spending another hour with Patrick, ended up getting another half a dozen records. We could listen the records on his good quality stero system, which gives a much better idea about the records than the often dinky listening stations which do not really allow to distinguish the record quality from the crappy TT/headphone combo limitations. Jazz and Blues sections were particularly good (at least for my taste), and the rest of the music universe was well...
Read moreI'd like to preface but saying, I am a fair, and generally generous reviewer of business. I rarely give one star. Okay, here it is. This is the worst record store I have ever been to. Now, I'm not saying it's not ok for a store to be messy, on the contrary. Sometimes there is a charm to that. This store was beyond messy. There were boxes everywhere, a cat(?), someone just sitting in the corner silently, a blender, dunkin's wrappers, garbage, you name it. It was extremely difficult to look at the records. Just boxes and boxes everywhere. The store smelled bad. And above all else, the gentleman working there was not friendly. When trying to check out, he was strange and made the transaction difficult with snarky and sarcastic comments. This store had mostly old classic rock records. If you have the patience and tolerance, I'm sure you could find something you want. But seriously, I would avoid this store all together. There are so many better options...
