I have been coming down to the island since I was a little boy. We purchased a pony back in 1986 and gave her a nice home in Southwestern Pa. It is a great family oriented vacation spot. If you want Ocean City or Myrtle Beach, visit there. Chincoteague is never going to be that and that is okay. People love Chincoteague and Assateague because it isnt a commercial resort island. The island offers great boating, fishing, on or off shore. Camping at your own risk of course. The Chincoteague Airforce is a real thing. They are deadly. You ditch the car and grab a bike, moped, or golf cart licensed for the Virginia road and go explore. Pony swim of course is the busy week. Expect the tiny island to be busy, you better know the backroads if you know what I mean. If you are a seafood lover like me you should definitely hit Rays Shanty and the Village Restaurants. Need a place to stay. Comfort Suites is the best. There are several other nostalgia style places as well. The Birchwood, the Sea Shell, Refuge to name a few. It just depends on what you like. I have even do VRBO on the island and they were great. Bottom line, take a few days. Get to the island. Talk to people and explore. There is definitely something for everyone. Heck we didn't even talk about the beach or...

The Tom’s Cove gift shop was closed as well as the NPS visitor building. The loop road was open and it was a nice little drive to see the ever changing landscape. The ponies were out and about too. I’ll keep coming back until I’m not able. It’s my little...
Read moreShort midweek trip had a great time but have to say the amount of political signs kind of ruined the nice small coastal town vibe. I understand it’s everyone’s right but with so many signs and even businesses pushing politics. It took away from the overall experience and made some places uncomfortable to visit. Also midweek a lot of the town is shut down finding places opened were difficult. Even their websites showed places opened or closed with inaccurate...
