Our morning started off late, as we were asked to arrive promptly at 6:45 and our guide didn't arrive until a short while later. The boat was below average with no seating except for two hard plastic chairs and an engine cover to sit on. This wasn't ideal for a 6 person charter. It was a windy morning and as we were heading out of the harbor, I asked the guide why there were no other boats heading out and he informed us that all the rest of the charters had cancelled due to weather conditions with high wind. He said we were going to try to fish closer to shore to avoid cancelling. With hindsight, we should have asked to turn around as we had no desire to head out into bad weather but we trusted our guide would find us a nice place to fish. With four foot swells in the bay and no fish to be found, he brought us out further. Waves got bigger, my family got sicker and the fish were still no where to be found. Our guide was nice but vaped while we were on our trip which smelled terrible. Not ideal. One of my kids was sick and puking for the majority of the trip and the others were sick, including myself who never gets sea sick. This was a terrible trip and one my family is not happy to repeat. $6oo is a lot of money for our family and it turned out poorly. I contacted the company twice and have received no reply. Very disappointing and we will...
Read moreThis place was definitely "Above Average"! We had a great 4 hour trip trolling for Spanish Mackerel. Our Captain, Captain Rich threw in the first 2 lines and we had action immediately. When that spot started to die down he did an awesome job of keeping things moving so the fish kept hitting. Helen was very friendly and helpful in getting us booked, even providing us with some flexibility with what time we could start our fishing trip since our hotel was a couple hours away and gave us some good advice on managing seasickness. Take one Dramamine the night before your trip and one more the morning of your trip out to sea. The waves were a bit choppy when we went out, adding an extra bit of challenge and excitement to our fishing trip, but we had no problems after following Helen's instructions on taking the medication. If you've never been out to sea before, I highly recommend taking the Dramamine, just in case. Once we returned to land, Captain Rich swiftly fileted our fish and pointed us in the direction of Crabbys restaurant (which was right across from where the Above Average boats are docked) where we had our freshly caught fish cooked to order and they were delicious! I'm looking forward to booking my next fishing trip with Above...
Read moreJust got back from a 6 hour trip with our captain/guide Mike. The trip was amazing, First off, our group of 4 fishers managed to bag 8 keeper red grouper and a few grunt worth keeping, more than enough. That doesn't include the ones we caught that were literally 1/2 inch too small and were 'only' a blast to reel in.
Mike showed us how to hook them easily, and despite an early morning storm brewing about 10 miles away, he kept in front of it, and we managed to use it for shade the whole time, so we weren't ever baking in the sun. He knew where the fish were for sure, and if we didn't get a bite after a short bit, we moved a few hundred feet and got going again. His method works and keeps it interesting. Don't plan on sitting there and passing the time, do plan on fighting and catching fish.
When we got back he cleaned them all quickly (including bones etc.) and even got the grouper cheeks for us without being asked! Super nice people.
A great trip, fun time, and looking forward to fish tacos/sandwiches tonight, and the next few days as well! Book them now!
Thanks...
