Your staff do not know anything about ADA law. I was with a client doing Service Dog task training, which requires food & treat work as a part of the process, and we were approached by a security officer and another gentleman that stated he was part of the management. They asked if the dog was a service dog, to which we replied “Yes, he is.” They then proceeded to ask for documentation — to which I attempted to educate them that according to the US Government instated American Disabilities Act, they are “not allowed to require any type of identification or certification documents for the dog or medical documentation from the handler.”
However, I was interrupted by the management, saying “This is private property”. Which also violates an ADA law stating, “Businesses, nonprofit organizations, and state and local governments are typically required to allow service dogs under ADA service dog laws to accompany people with disabilities in any areas that are open to the public. They must be allowed in establishments that prepare or serve food regardless of local or state health codes prohibiting animals on the premises. ADA service dog laws will always overrule local laws.”
After seeing his vest, upon closer inspection, they decided to leave us be. However, being that this is something service dog owners should NOT have to endure every day of their life — we decided to see if we can speak to upper management.
After being guided by many of the mall’s store leads, we found that other management was not present and were again confronted by the two men from before.
They stated that the mall “required” documentation, where the rules on the mall signs did not indicate that specifically.
We were then asked to leave.
This mall is NOT service dog friendly, they will confront you, belittle you, interrupt you when you try to educate, question how you task-train, etc.
I would call the management office, but was told I’d simply be speaking with the gentleman that gave me and my service dog client such a hard time.
Poor customer service, definitely need to brush up on ADA law. Must feel like big men, illegally kicking out two women with a service animal.
When I asked to have the number of another management member, they simply told me to look it up and dismissed me asking for...

Read moreMan this place used to be the spot. This place used to be the life and blood of Decatur Alabama besides all the plants on the river. Now this mall has turned into a graveyard and the only thing that's keeping it afloat is the Big D movie theater, bath & body works, bed bath & beyond and electronics Express.
This place used to have the best Chinese restaurant besides old the old school formosa that used to be on 6th Ave by taco bell and canton house.
It used to have college game day stores, sbarraos pizza, a carousel inside of it and giant fountains and candy stores, whatever you wanted it was in this mall.
Everyone was there all the time, all year long from winter to summer. It was the hangout and where a lot of the locals worked and you could always go walk around the mall for a few hours as a teenager or even an adult and run into at least three to four people you knew either shopping or working and now the only people you'll run into is probably the janitor or older people who are in there speedwalking getting their daily exercises in.
It's a shame because I used to work in this mall at Sears back in the day and I loved it. I loved how my lunch break I could walk to five or six different restaurants, go into whatever store I wanted to possibly see friends and family out and about but now it's nothing.
There was rumors and talk in the town a few years back that somebody else was going to buy it and redo everything and turn it back into what it used to be if not even better than it was in the 90s and early 2000s but it's now even worse than it was before which I know malls live and die but it just sucks because this was one that our town grew up with you know?
Maybe in the future there's a possibility of it being reborn......
