John and his Father assisted me in outfitting a newly minted Artilleryman at his first major reenactment. With the general quality of Sutlers lacking at said event, we were pleased to find John's shop well stocked with all necessary accoutrements. Great coats of quality at an affordable price , and trousers of ample girth with quality kersey. Very nice haversacks for the money, and brogans to beat fall creeks limited supply. Some may find John's demeanor a bit too dry, but as military men one should take this as a professional courtesy in an attempt to assist your with your queries in an expedient a fashion as practical. Having shopped with John myself on several occasions prior, I was happy to see him warm up as our transaction progressed. He is a wonderful man to work with, especially when time provides and respect is given in communication. The only comment of ire would be placed upon the button thread used on the Trousers, which gave way early and in number. This is an absolute must see/stop while you are in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. The man tending the store, Ray, was so much fun to talk to. We spent a lot of time here and found out that Ray does reenactments, and even had an appearance in the 1993 movie Gettysburg! There was so much to see, and we even bought a few small things from him. I could’ve spent a lot more! We also visited the museum next door, which was also spectacular and very enlightening. I’ve learned a lot of interesting things over there. One of the most interesting gadgets was the pill maker, and a curling iron! The Maryland Sutler is always the one sutler i can always depend on to always have what i am looking for when i need a uniform upgrade, or new brogans, or any accessory. John is easy to talk to when you need something. I messaged him on his facebook page seeing if he had an item in stock and he got back to me the same day. Our uniforms and accessories are not always cheap. But everything i buy from John is high quality and prices are not as high as other sutlers which is a plus.
