My family was in town visiting for the week when my toddler fell and hurt her arm. Looking like it might be broken, we decided it was best that we take her in. Having the privilege of living near all of the Boston hospitals, I am extremely weary of being seen anywhere else in the world. We brought her to this hospital assuming they could handle something such as this, it is an emergency room after all with medical doctors. Big mistake! Our daughter had turned two just days prior and had never had an injury to this extent, so she was a fighter to anyone who came near her. The two nurses were extremely dry with us and with her. In the xray room they had five, yes FIVE, people plus myself holding her down. Complete hysteria and chaos unfolded in that room. She was already terrified and in pain, but now she had numerous strangers holding her down and pulling her into weird positions with her body to keep her arm straight. Once back in our room, the doctor came and let us know she did in fact have a break. However, he said “the good news is it’s not a complete break on this bone” (I have a video of his exact words) and pointed to her radius. He suggested a fiberglass cast for her to stabilize it or a splint. Again, our daughter is two. I knew a splint wouldn’t stay on her arm, so we opted for the fiberglass. He did agree that was the best choice and left to get the nurses to help him. Within a minute, he returned and said the nurses were not willing to put a cast on her and we were going to do the splint. He assured me this was completely fine to do as it would stabilize it and protect her from further damage. He put her splint on and sent us off with instructions to see pedi ortho or her pcp in about a week. As I said, we were on vacation so it was a few days before we got back home. She broke her arm around 11:30 pm on Tuesday, we were in with ortho at Boston Children’s Hospital Monday morning. We did follow up X-rays to see how it was healing so far, only to find out my child had not one but TWO broken bones. Both bones had complete breaks in them. The doctor we were with at Children’s stated she should have never ever been in a splint for almost a week, a fiberglass cast should have been done immediately. She showed us the breaks on the xray, which I compared to the video on my phone from PA. They were clear as day when she pointed them out! She said she was very lucky she didn’t have any further damage to her arm with a splint. Additionally, the splint they gave us was an older child size. It looked like a boxing mitt on her and slid off very easily, despite making sure it was tightened, between the first visit in Gettysburg and our appt in Boston. We did a fiberglass cast for 3 weeks, followed by an actual toddler size splint for 2 weeks. The complete negligence of this hospital is absolutely unacceptable. We have yet to receive our bill from them, however I plan to call their billing department to fight all charges. I would not recommend anyone go to this hospital if they can’t see two completely...
Read moreMy father was admitted to gburg hospital three weeks ago with sepsis, a blood infection and an UTI. Two weeks in we were told the the infections are gone but the delirium, reminds and they don’t know why. They called for a family meeting and we told out of the blue that there isn't anything more they can do because he isn’t eating and infections are gone. We could take him home on hospice and he will die in two weeks or they could give him a feeding tube. We decided on a feeding tube, but before they put one in, he started eating. His stomach got huge and hasn’t moved his bowels in 2 1/2 weeks. Yet, no one thought that was strange. Finally they decided to “release the gas” long story short they said his bowels weren’t working and other than getting him moving there wasn’t much they could do because the medication they have to treat it will do more damage to his heart. After almost three weeks and once again out of the blue (my mom is in visiting dad daily and us kids also go in) they called my mom at 10:30 and told her they are moving him at noon. The transport ambulance came and and paperwork wasn’t ready so they had to come back at 1:45. On the way to the rehab center he became unresponsive. When they finally got to rehab center, the nurses took one look at him and his pee bag and noticed there was blood in there and he was in no condition to be there and needs to return to the hospital. The family said we didn’t want him to go back to Gettysburg and we paid an extra $20 a mile for them to transport him to chambersburg hospital. They had his records from Gettysburg and said that his BP has been low the last few times they took it. They also noticed all the blood in the urine. Within 30 minutes the blood work stated he did have an UTI and his stomach was once again extended. His oxygen level also dropped and they gave him 2 liters of oxygen. Now remember Gettysburg just released him just a few hours ago stating he was in Good health to go to rehab. Also remember he can’t stand, walk or take care of his basic needs! Please ask yourself if you would want yourself or family member to get this type of care????? I totally feel the nurses aid knew more and did more than the RNs and doctors. I wouldn’t take my dog there. I truly feel my father was neglected at Gettysburg Hospital!!!!!! I would like to speak to the doctors or board at hospital, but I am unable to get anywhere...
Read moreI know walking in your house after a long day at work and seeing the wrecked house by your child could be stress full or joyful at times but I walked in to a untouched picture perfect living room today and my baby balled up next to her mom not showing any excitement for daddy to be home and it was not pleasant but was very sad and concerning. After paying 2 visits this past week at the Gettysburg Hospital emergency ( Charles McBeth and Renee Sandlin) and my daughter’s oxygen levels dropping down to 91 and her constant fever reaching 104 and the only thing we got from them was her lungs sound good just keep giving her Tylenol and ibuprofen after telling them her cough is getting wurst and definitely sounds like she is having trouble breathing and all we got was “we can’t do anything until her oxygen levels dropping down to 87, and definitely would love to point out the smarts ass comments and dumb ass questions about my daughter development and skills. So finally we decided to go to Wellspan Urgent CareHanover (Rachel Wallace and the nurse who help us like an angle) super nice people, super friendly and walk us through how my daughter’s health was actually bad and we weren’t just going crazy. They listened to her lungs and told us how it did not sound great “ when we were told by both the docs from Gettysburg er that her lungs sounded great on Monday and Friday.” So I guess in one day lungs got so bad. So they did a X-ray ( which does say that she is developing early pneumonia) gave her antibiotics and a breathing treatment. 30 minutes later we got home and yes our living room looked like it was being wrecked and my daughter was running in the house asking her mom for food and mind you she hasn’t had a proper meal since Wednesday because she didn’t want to eat and now she is sound asleep. Just wanted to spread the word for parents out there if you’re child does have rsv or any other symptoms like congestion, coughing, constant fever or any other respiratory issues that makes you concerned don’t even bother wasting your time at Gettysburg er because unless you child is literally fighting for their life they aren’t going to do shit or if I’m wrong I would love to know why would they not...
