La Ronde, Honolulu. Perched atop the Ala Moana Building like a UFO that mistook a shopping center for a landing pad, this was America’s first revolving restaurant, opening its doors in 1961. Brainchild of architect John Graham, the same visionary who later spun up Seattle’s Space Needle, La Ronde offered diners a 360-degree view of paradise, completing a full rotation every hour.  
The menu? A mid-century medley featuring delights like shrimp cocktail and mahi-mahi, served with a side of mild vertigo. But the real showstopper was the view—Honolulu unfolding beneath you as you sipped your cocktail, the city lights twinkling like sequins on a hula skirt.  
However, novelty has a shelf life. By the 1990s, La Ronde had rotated its last, succumbing to mechanical issues and the public’s waning interest. The space was repurposed for offices, and the revolving floor was welded stationary, perhaps to prevent office chairs from endlessly drifting away.
