The energy at the edge of the city and the ocean was off the charts.
I was filming the waves under the pier.
And only later, at home, while reviewing the footage, I suddenly saw: a tragedy had happened there — and no one had noticed. A bird, tangled in a bundle of fishing line, was hanging upside down beneath the pier — and was essentially doomed.
Waves were hitting it, throwing it back and slamming it against every wall.
It kept hitting, tried to take off, hit again.
It did take off — but the line held it tight.
And it was terrifying. I had tried to enter the pier to check the video and delete unnecessary clips.
But they didn’t let me in — I didn’t have a dollar on me.
If I had gotten in and looked through the footage, I would’ve seen her.
I would’ve found the line, cut it, and maybe — I could’ve saved her. But that didn’t happen. A pier is not just a place. It’s a place of responsibility.
If you’re allowed to fish — clean up after yourself.
If you're in charge of maintenance — do your part.
Because there’s no such thing as someone else’s trash.
