Gifts of the West — Local services in Kanab

I visited this store around 5 pm on Saturday, 10/2 on a weekend visit to Kanab. I spent probably 30 minutes there studying their merchandise and selecting both souvenirs for myself and gifts for others. I am giving the store 2 stars only because I found some of the merchandise attractive. During that 30 minutes, the one employee in the store remained behind the counter, never greeting me or offering any help - a sharp contrast to my experience in the first of the two stores I had decided to visit while in town. She was listening to something I initially assumed was voicemail messages. Mostly I was looking at things and not focused on what was being said and was at times in the second room and out of earshot. At the end of my visit I was surprised to discover it was a radio talk show, arguing political points I disagreed with. At that point, I looked over at her and she turned down the volume, slightly. Gift shop owners in Kanab must realize that their store depends on out-of-town visitors which certainly include significant numbers of both political persuasions. They need to train their employees accordingly. I have never before had this experience, which underscores what most store owners understand. My decision was immediate. Horrible customer service!! My friend and I are both locals (and seniors in high school) and we went in just because we were bored and we wanted to window shop. We were not greeted or anything when we went in so we just kinda shopped around and looked at some jewelry. Then the lady said in a VERY passive aggressive tone, “so we actually recommend that you come in the store with a parent just so you don’t break anything...” so I said “ummm yeah we’re 18...” and she was like “oh yeah uh ha”. My mom and I went here on a road trip in June and the ladies that ran the store were so sweet. They have a beautiful selection too. I called them looking for a certain ring for my mom for Christmas and they took the time to email pictures of their selection and answer my questions. Rose is the nicest lady you could ever hope to meet. If we are ever back in the area we will be returning...
