It was the best of times, it was the worst of times (I'll take the blame) My son and I visited Key West on a cruise. We had tried to do glass bottom boat tours in several different ports over the past couple of years but all were cancelled due to weather. We booked this one hoping it would go. It did!
Upon arrival at the dock we found the Fury reps and checked in. Immediately we were advised that seas were very rough and we could cancel if we wanted. Not wanting to disappoint my son, I enthusiastically said we wanted to still go.
It was a short walk to the boat. Very well organized and our guide was awesome leading us there. Boarding was easy and the first impressions of the boat were great. Large boat, very clean and well maintained. The crew obviously enjoys what they do and they are good at it!
It was a ROUGH ride out to the reef but until this point I was doing okay. We arrived at the reef and the boat slows to a crawl. The visuals though the glass were amazing. I was still holding it together. Then, a rush of warmth hit me. I began sweating and the nausea set in. I tried to rough it out for my son, but I had to head out to deck for fresh air. Several others were out there, also hit with the dreaded sea-sickness. This was a moment where the crew shined. Earlier we were told if we were feeling ill to see a crew member and they had a "few tricks up their sleeve". I did not seek one out, they found me. I was asked if I was okay, I said I was feeling a bit green. Immediately the crew member brought me a cup of ice and gave me some tips on how to reduce the symptoms. That was my experience....
Now my son, he was unfazed. He had the best time and over the next couple of days he would quiz me me on all the facts that were shared during the excellent narration of what we were seeing through the glass. I was happy that I was able to see some of it before I had to retreat and his retelling of it brought back memories of moments that I had missed while trying to "keep it together".
Was it worth it? 100%. Should I have opted out after the warning of rough seas? Maybe. But in the end I'm glad I didn't. If you are prone to sea sickness you may want to heed the warnings. Hopefully we can get back to Key West on a calmer day and I can enjoy it as much...
Read moreTo start out, the nice woman at the front who sold us tickets acted like we’d see a multitude of sea creatures. She talked it up so we were excited. As we got on the boat, we looked around. A glass part of the bottom was obviously cracked and everything was out of date and rather dirty. Dirty carpet especially, and somewhat cracked cushions on the modest seats. It just seemed like they should maybe invest some money into the boat, and they charge a whopping $70 a person so I’d think they could possibly afford it. The intercom system they used to relay messages was also old and useless. It’d squeak extremely loudly in my ear when they talked, and the (I’m assuming) safety instruction speech they had went right over my head, because I could NOT hear them speaking on that old system. They promised a 2 hour tour. It took us probably 35-40 minutes to go out to the reef, and we got maybe 30 minutes to sit over the reef. The best we saw was a few small damsel fish, and one singular parrot fish. While the host seemed very knowledgeable, there was very little life to point out and talk about, contrary to the woman’s speech we got at the very beginning. The coolest thing we saw the whole time was a short glimpse of a dolphin while we were on our way to the reef, not even while we were there. I understand one can’t completely control what will pop up, but do not talk it up like we will see sharks and such if the chances are that low. By the time we were heading back, I was exhausted and somewhat woozy. I would’ve enjoyed a small soda but they charged MORE money just for a can of that and a small fun sized bag of chips. For $70 and almost zero fish, couldn’t we at least get a small cheap beverage? I’m not asking for the moon. We headed back from the 2pm tour at 3pm and easily had another 25 minutes of spare time when we got back from the two hours they advertise. Needless to say, this was a complete and total waste of...
Read moreMy wife and I went for a tour on the Glass Bottom Boat today and for $70 per person, it was an extremely underwhelming experience. The boat itself is old and one of the plexiglass panels in the viewing area has a decent sized crack I couldn’t help but stare at and pray to God it didn’t burst. It’s a pretty long swim back to shore from the reef. The reef itself is super hyped up as a haven for sea creatures actually only contains some very small, underwhelming fish— there are no sharks, dolphins, sea turtles, etc. I’ve seen cooler fish at Petsmart and in people’s home aquariums. It’s a narrated tour, but the audio system on the boat is horrid, so the host’s commentary is just loud noise to keep you awake while you stare at the boring little fishes and get rocked back and forth like a baby in a crib. If you think to bring an airplane neck pillow thing, it’s not a bad spot for a nap but for the price, you can rent a hotel room with cable for a night. I regret doing this as it was a waste of money. There’s not even complimentary drinks. They make you pay for a canned soda. So, to the traveler on the fence, I’d say go to the...
