TLDR-The store was great! Big Selection and Dylan was so helpful in picking out a longboard!
This review is long but It is on my heart what happened and I have to share.
We went into Ron Jon's because my husband specifically wanted a Ron Jon T shirt (we are from NC and he had gotten a shirt as a kid from the Cocoa Beach Location). He had really liked it and had not been to one in 20+ years and I had never been to one. We picked out a shirt pretty easily and appreciated the abundance of Big & Tall sizes (he's 6'4" and wears a 2XL). We go upstairs after picking out a shirt just to look around and wander over to the longboard section.
Backstory-I'm a 32 lady (cue Jenna Marbles reference) and just got into skating last summer. I'm 5'0" tall with short legs and I bought an eggboard on Amazon and thoroughly enjoyed the longboard style cruising on a shorter style board. I then bought a penny board online and got relatively proficient riding it. I mainly ride around my neighborhood and on a local walking trail. I'm a major beginner and the idea of buying a longboard in a skate/surf store had not even entered my mind. Random skate shops I had wandered into before did not feel inviting to me where I would have felt good about getting a longboard. I had thought that I would just stick to buying online and that would be ok.
Back to looking at longboards... There was not anyone looking in that area so we started looking at different nickel sized boards. It is important to note that I had Zero Intention of purchasing a board. I was browsing and it was the first time I had been close to so many different boards. I had pulled one off the racks and was looking at it when Dylan, the sales associate, came up and asked if we needed any help. I said we were just looking and noticed that the board I had picked up seemed more for carving and going down hills etc. I said I am more into cruising around and put it back. He then started looking at the top of one rack that had a different nickel sized board and said he was going to get it down to show me. Before he was able to get it down, I asked him about an aluminum board they had on display. I was curious because I had never heard of or seen a metal skateboard. He was forthcoming and said he did not see the point of them because they would likely rust and their best use would be for displaying the deck on a wall. I appreciated his honesty and that he did not make me feel any certain negative way for being uninitiated. He pulled down this Carver 28" Snapper board and said that it was $179 (little eek moment) but that it was the "Tesla" of longboards. My interest was piqued. I saw it and fell in love with the size, shape, black wheels, and grip tape design. He described it to me and advised that the wheels and trucks would handle things like pebbles and rocks that it ran over better than most. As someone who has ate it several times from hitting the smallest of rocks, that feature blew my mind and I had to have it. He also advised that he had a Carver and the status of the brand in longboard culture. I told him that I wanted it and he showed me another deck/wheel combo to make sure I didn't like it better. I stayed with the original black wheel board and made my purchase. I was ecstatic and gave it a test ride once we got off disney property (very serious no skateboarding rules) and it was amazing! This was a long review (see TLDR at beginning) but as someone who is older than a stereotypical skate customer, not well versed in skate culture, and still very much a beginner, the ease of the interaction with no judgement was something I did not think I would ever have. Everyone we spoke to at the shop was nice but Dylan really made the difference (Thanks Dylan!). I walked in planning to buy a T shirt and steal a peek at the longboards but ended up happily purchasing a Carver. Also got the Ron Jon sticker! Very Happy! If you got here thanks for reading my very...
