
My boyfriend and I were really excited to check out the 40 West Art Walk today. Our experience was a mixed bag. On one hand, we did really love the concept and appreciate the support of local artist. We love the idea of bringing art into the streets and following the green line felt like embarking on a treasure hunt. Unfortunately, a lot of the walk was in areas that felt unsafe for many reasons. As a woman, I would feel incredibly unsafe walking this area alone or with my children. My boyfriend grew up on the South side of San Antonio (the roughest part of San Antonio, TX) and his "be diligent about watching everyone and keep your head on a swivel" radar was on 100%. Read moreI expected a small art gallery. I WAS AMAZED by the size and quality of this fairly new art DISTRICT! The artist, performers and organizers of the monthly First Friday Art Walk make sure you have a great time. Incredible art, fire, music, entertainers, and beer (from the round-the-corner WetFax Brewery) were my favorite parts of the event. The quality and caliber of the art was far better than I expected. This is no "local community center art fair". These are welders and jewelers and sculptors and amazing people that dedicate their lives to their passions.
