Friendly and helpful staff, especially the hardware & lawn/garden departments. The prices are nothing to write home about, though they sometimes have good sales. It's always worth looking at the weekly flyers, and the reduced price section. Dennis Company was recently bought out by ACE Hardware, which can only make them better. Highly recommended. If you're on the peninsula and need hardware, Dennis (in Long Beach) and Jack's (in Ocean Park) are the best places to look for what you need.
ONE ISSUE I'D LIKE TO SEE FIXED:
I shop at Dennis in Long Beach often. One time I was looking for an emergency flashlight. They had a good selection with different features. One flashlight advertised that it glowed in the dark to make it easy to find when shut off. But not being in the dark I couldn't test it to see how good it was. So I approached a worker (young man, seemed about 17-18 years old) and asked him if I could take it into the single stall family style restroom with the lights shut off, to test it. He said yes, but only if I gave him my purse to hold while I was in there.... Wait... What?!
Keep in mind no customer can go into the restroom in this store w/o asking for a key, and he would see me go in with this one flashlight because I was asking him to accompany me to do this. Obviously if I came out without that flashlight, it might be in my purse, trying to steal it. But anyone with half a brain should realize that's not what I was doing. I was clearly letting him know I was testing the flashlight to see if it glowed in the dark, and he would be right there, outside the door, assisting me, waiting for me and the flashlight to come back out after a few seconds. But no, he would not allow that.
He would not allow me to go into this tiny room with the flashlight (fearing I might steal it), but at the same time he expected me to leave him with my purse and all my money, credit cards, and other valuables I had inside. So, bottom line, he could not trust me with a $20 flashlight, but I was to trust him with all my money, credit cards, cell phone, ID, etc. Not only was he asking me to trust him with all of my money (hundreds) and other valuable and personal items in my purse, but at the same time he was letting me know he didn't trust me with a $20 item.
I was disgusted and insulted. It's not like I wanted to walk around the store in the dark with a backpack. I understand how theft is perpetrated. I understand certain precautions need to be taken by stores to stop theft. But this is clearly a case of one young man with little to no retail customer service experience doing something ridiculous, and in turn insulting a customer. Dennis Company needs to train their employees better so something like this doesn't happen again.
PS) I finally agreed to let him go inside the restroom and test the flashlight for me. I could not see it, I had to take his word for it. He said it did not glow much at all, not bright at all, so I did not buy it. I haven't been in that store since then, and I'm not sure if I ever want to shop there again because he made me feel so...
Read moreI have been shopping at Dennis Company since I can remember and they have always been helpful . Whenever something comes up and I need something quick the place to go for a great deal and selection is Dennis Company. I can't always afford to go all the way to oregon for just one special item , like Just the other day my aquarium air pump went out and they were the first on my list I just gave them a call to check and see if they had the pump I needed and then jumped in my car and went to pick it up. They saved me a long trip and the lives of my fish who would have died otherwise. Bravo to Dennis Company for always having the things I need at great prices and the customer service is outstanding always and that is true for all the stores. Thank you for saving my fish!...
Read moreFriendly employees, fair prices and has nearly anything I need without going to Astoria. I only didn't rate at 5stars because sometimes employees don't always ask if they can help with you with anything. Ya know, the typical retail "meet n greet" when you're pacing an isle for 5 min obviously looking for something. Lots of misc stuff you would need for the home and daily life. It's a hardware store mostly, with work clothes, camping supplies, canning stuff, some craft items, housewares etc. Remember before home Depot or Walmart... Yeah,...
