I really don’t like giving small business 2-star reviews but in this case, I think I’ll have to.
It’s a cute shop and the displays are beautiful and the owners have done a great job, making it look quaint and welcoming, that is for sure. The problem is employees. Well, there’s one employee that I dealt with the first time I went in and her micro aggressions. She made sure to say to me “I’ll be with you as soon as I can” as I was just standing in line patiently there were only a few people ahead of me. It wasn’t a big deal. But what I did notice was it everyone else who came in the door? She gave a loud warm welcome, and she would say, “Welcome in!” If they were white, and when they went up to her she would say how are you doing today? But for me, there was nothing. As a Hispanic woman who is born and raised in Oregon, specifically small town in Oregon I am very familiar with micro aggressions. I have experienced them from people I went to school with, and even people that I have worked with in professional settings as a long time business owner in Portland. But it’s 2025. It’s time to evolve. There is absolutely no reason to take your prejudices with you to work. And if you just can’t help it, then you should not be working with the general public. I ended up not buying any pastries because they did look like they were potentially prepared the night before and I went in at probably 7:30 AM expecting to have fresh pastries so I just got a coffee and it was kind of weak but then again it was a 16 ounce so it was probably mostly milk. Now, the women that were working on the deli side they were very sweet, especially the one that was working in the back she had a very positive and helpful attitude and if I were a business owner, I would hire five more of her. But the girl that has the attitude for people For whom she has prejudices, really destroyed the experience completely. I ended up spending under five dollars. When I could’ve spent much much more.
I did spend much more later that evening, when I returned with my friend, my white friend, to buy pies and several pastries. And then employee was very kind. The only problem is that he smashed all of our pastries into a small box. So we had macaroons and devil bars, kind of smashed on top of the strawberry race tracks, and it was just a mess. He could’ve easily use a bigger box. So please don’t smash the pastries on top of one another. 😊 thank you! Shop is...
Read moreI have lived here sense I was a kid until I moved to elsewhere but I still come to visit. I used to love getting pastries from this place, but with recent events I will not be going back. My friend and I were having our birthday party this last weekend and she had ordered the cupcakes she wanted 12 and was quoted $35 (this will be important soon) she specifically asked for 6 to be a vanilla base with pink frosting with white sprinkles. The other 6 where supposed to be Chocolate base with a black and white frosting to resemble a cow print with fondant horns. As I said earlier she was quoted $35, but these people proceeded to charge her $48 almost $50 without telling her if the fondant was extra then she should have been told before being charged!! Well she is told you can only be a few minutes late to pick them up the pickup time was at 3 no exceptions. So we send someone to pick up these cupcakes we were so excited for them, but were highly disappointed when we got cupcakes with all pink frosting no sprinkles and the horns where made with frosting and to be quiet honest they looked like absolute garbage they looked like a kindergartner decided to have a project on cupcakes. The vanilla base ones looked square and looked like they were just tossed around willy nilly ,so we had to redecorate them to even look presentable for our birthday. Our cupcakes looked like they were doing the YMCA with the so called horns like how did y'all do this type of work and think this...
Read moreEdit: Update: I meant to write this sooner. Many thanks to the manager for reaching out and offering an upgrade replacement for the soup. The kindness and generosity were very much appreciated, and we look forward to returning soon as we’re able. Overall, this place is good. It’s a charming bakery, with more choices than you can shake a stick at. The service was quick enough, even with a long line.
I also went to the deli, where things were a little more scattered. The lady at the register was nice, but was not fully caffeinated to face the day. I had to ask twice to make sure I got a bowl of clam chowder, because she was running through a list of options for my Reuben.
Once I got my food, I noticed the chowder seemed smaller than I expected, but I went on my way, perhaps too trustingly, thinking at least it’s probably full. Nope, half full, they accidentally gave me the cup. I really should have said something on the spot. However, let this be an informed opinion that if the sizes seem off, there was probably a miscommunication in the kitchen, and mentioning is ok.
Otherwise, the Reuben I go was tasty, though for $16 they should include either more pickle spears or a bag of chips.
Any review of the bakery items will...
