BANGLUCK MARKET Hollywood~Thaitown — Local services in Los Angeles

I came to Bangluck Market because Bangkok Market on Melrose Ave closed in mid November 2019. Though eventually I would've tried Bangluck anyway. If you're used to Bangkok Market as I was (I'd been going to Bangkok Market since the mid 1980s, it was only a few blocks away from me), you'll probably be disappointed by Bangluck Market, as I was. But if you've never been to Bangkok Market, you won't know what you're missing. Someone needs to open a new Thai Market in the East Melrose area (that part of Melrose Ave between Western Ave and Vermont Ave, the East Hollywood part of Melrose Ave) now that Bangkok Market is gone. That area has been left without a Thai market (there is a Phillipino market, Tambuli, on Vermont near Melrose, but they don't have many of the things I found at Bangkok). I've only went inside Bangluck Market once. It's not close by to where I'm at. It's much smaller than Bangkok Market was, and there's only narrow space between the aisles, making it a cramped store with high shelves that are close to each other. While Bangkok had a lot of space between aisles and was a very laid-back, open store, with a nice smell. I didn't notice bad smells at Bangluck though, but I didn't explore the entire little market. The staff at Bangkok was very nice, while the workers at Bangluck mostly don't seem to be. Well, I'll be visiting Bangluck Market only rarely, and I don't much like Silom market either. I purchased 2 bottles of Samb Oelek chili paste when I got home and opened the top lid I noticed that the bottle was already opened as both the seals under neath the cap were already broken open for about an inch. So I checked the second bottle low and behold same thing. I drove back to the store and had them replaced as they were closing, I showed the security guard as he was locking up he was nice enough to grab 2 new bottles for me. He removed the cap and it looked sealed so I really didn’t think much of it and came back home. When I checked the seal at home it came right off and has a strange odor kind of like the product but with a mixture of a chemical maybe. I always purchase this product on a regular basis and the seal is really hard to get off I normally use a knife to cut through to get it off also the color of the product is on the brown so I ended trashing it and purchased a couple of bottles of the same product from Albertsons with no issues. I’ve never had an issue at this store before but something has changed seems a little shady for selling a product like this. I’ve included photos the first 2 are the once I purchased yesterday the third photo is of one I had purchased from Albertsons as you can see you can’t get the seal completely off as they stick to the edges. Needless to say I will not be going back...

Terrible, foul smelling, unpleasant experience. I have been here several times, always looking for a specialty Asian item for recipes my wife likes to prepare. This time it was something easy; egg roll wrappers, easy right? Wrong! First, the woman up front sent me to aisle 1 where there was nothing but dry noodles - no egg roll wrappers period. I checked the #1 refrigerator door to eliminate that possibility but not there either.

I went back to her and asked again, "please, I need egg roll wrappers - they may be refrigerated, they may be frozen but unlikely they are dry..." She says "oh you mean frozen?" Hopefully, I say "yes! I'll take them frozen or refrigerated! " She says " go to door 14 or maybe 13" Okay, I go. Guess what? No egg roll wrapper... Can you help me? I get a blank, unblinking stare like I am speaking Martian.

Besides the fact that no food market should smell like rotten fish or maybe rotten meat no retail market should be so openly hostile. I learned my lesson, I am unwelcome as a customer, it couldn't have been more obvious. I'll find another, better smelling, cleaner, friendlier place to trade. ...
