For a place called "friends & family" I certainly didn't feel welcomed. My husband and I recently moved to the neighborhood and have been looking for our new regular breakfast spot. Friends & family is in walking distance from our house and we were very excited to try it!
When we walked in on Monday we were really impressed with the relaxed atmosphere, and gorgeous pastry case. The menu was right up our ally, so we thought we'd found our new haunt.
My husband complimented the pastry case remarking that "it all looks so good!" The girl behind the counter rolled her eyes.
My husband ordered the hash, coffees, and I ordered the eggs your way over medium.
We settled in and my eggs arrived an underdone over easy. The whites were not done! They were the texture of snot, (I'm sorry, but they were). I brought my plate to the girl and cheerfully asked if I could have my eggs cooked a little longer, please (no big deal! I get it!).
She took my plate and then came back to clarify that I wanted eggs over medium. I said, yes, and just that the whites needed to be done longer. We waited an uncomfortably long time and finally a man came and DROPPED my new dish in front of me. Yes, dropped, the plate was practically spinning, and stomped off without a word. I could see that they weren't medium, they were even less done then before simply by looking at them jiggle!
The first among many corroborating searches on Google defines an over medium egg as —
"Over-medium – The flipped egg is cooked slightly longer so the yolk is only partially runny. The egg white is completely cooked"
If those eggs were over medium what in God's name is over easy? Two raw eggs in your plate?
I really didn't appreciate being made to feel unwelcome at this business because some hipster chef thinks it's uncool to eat cooked eggs. This isn't steak, the attitude is wildly unnecessary.
But no, Chef-boy-R-Jerk had to make a point, huh? Way to treat your 'friends and family'.
I was nauseated by these eggs, so I left with my stomach turned. Too bad because it's so close to our house. We'll just keep patronizing Clark St. diner and...
Read moreOut of all the LA bakeries that have wholesale accounts, Friends & Family is easily my favorite. Their croissants are so crunchy and hold a terrific form that immediately catch my eyes from those pastry boxes.
Friends & Family has a wide selection of pastries. Besides the normal croissant variations, there are also pistachio almond croissant, sweet and savory danishes, cakes, muffins and cookies. You can also get fresh baguettes and bread loaves.
The cafe has plenty of seats, and a full day time menu. I went there for lunch with a friend and had the beef short rib hash (two eggs, braised beef, yukon potato & pickled chili salsa verde) and wow it was palatable and got amazing value for basically the price of a toast in those fancy, over hyped coffee shops.
That's what I really like about Friends & Family: it's pretty much a hidden gem, a down-to-earth neighborhood bakery cafe, although I think it's worth being recognized by a lot...
Read moreHonestly, their baked goods are delicious but their service is awful. I asked for my pastry to be warmed up -she said no. She said it had powdered sugar on top and it would melt. I personally don’t care if the powered sugar melts but I definitely care for a warm pastry. I asked if she could still warm it up knowing the powered sugar would melt and she gave me the meanest look and attitude. She took the pastry and never came back. After some time I reminded her, she took care of everyone in line, then went to the kitchen. She came back and handed me a burnt pastry. I’m 100% sure it was done on purpose. I had visited many times before and didn’t have an issue with friendliness but more recently the last two times they’ve been really mean. There’s SO many good bakeries in LA, there’s no reason why you need to put up with a bad attitude for a...
