Wildcat Mountaineering — Local services in Lyons

I had a fantastic recent experience, renting ski equipment from Wildcat Mountaineering.

Since I don’t ski that often, I don’t have my own equipment. The times I have skied, I loath the extra early hours and lines and cattle call that come with renting gear at a ski resort. Plus, prices tend to be higher at resorts.

We gave wildcat mountaineering a call, and they rented skis, boots, poles, and helmets all at a substantially lower price than the nearby Eldora ski area. Living in Lyons, it was convenient to be able to go in the afternoon before and get fitted for gear and not worry about the anxiety in the morning.

The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. It felt more like getting personalized detention at a specialty shoe boutique, instead of renting gear. I sat down on the couch as they discussed my shoe size and height, and then they went to the back to pull a pair of boots to try on. They hit the correct size on the first go. Once the boots for fit, they assessed my height and brought out a pair of skis and poles. Everything was ready to go and already loaded in my car for the next morning of skiing.

Next time I need to rent skis I plan on coming back here to do so. I learned they also rent out snow shoes, which is convenient for when we have guests visit...

Really excellent mountaineering store. Their inventory is a great balance of the essentials if you forgot something on your way up to the mountains (sunscreen, hats, etc), all the way up to serious climbing and mountaineering gear. They have probably one of the best selections of high-end climbing gear on the front range from DMM and Wild Country trad gear to great footwear options including all the newest Unparallel shoes.

Bought an awesome pair of approach shoes there that i couldnt find anywhere else and the staff was super helpful. Also stopped in a couple times for quick gear pickups on my way to various activities.

I have been renting one of the mountain bikes here in Lyons during my stay, and I have to say—it’s been an absolute game changer! I’m visiting from North Carolina and unfortunately couldn’t bring my own mountain bike on this trip, but getting out on these local trails has been 100% worth it. The terrain out here is unreal—challenging, scenic, and just downright fun. Every ride has been an adventure, and I’m blown away by how well-maintained and diverse the trail network is. Lyons truly is a hidden gem for mountain biking, and I’m already dreaming of my next trip...
