I used to love this store. Stopping by on a weekend to browse and buy yarn was one of my favorite ways to unwind. But my most recent visit left me feeling a bit disheartened and disappointed.
I noticed a sticker on the checkout counter that said customers receive a 20% off coupon for their birthday. My birthday was just yesterday, and I hadnāt received anything. I asked a staff member about it, and she confirmed that my birthday was correctly listed in their system and asked me to check my email again. I checked both my inbox and spam folder and found nothing aside from old receipts.
When I asked if there was any way to still receive the coupon, I was told, āThereās nothing I can do. It comes from the server,ā with no apology or effort to resolve the issue. A manager then came over and said, āJust give it to her,ā but the tone felt dismissiveālike I was trying to cheat the system or asking for something I didnāt deserve.
A simple acknowledgment of the mix-up or a āHappy belated birthdayā would have gone a long way. I didnāt come in for a 20% coupon. I came in today because I genuinely enjoyed purchasing yarn from my local shop. But today as I did not feel welcomed, I left without making a purchase. I hope the store can bring back the warmth and customer care that made it...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMcKinney Knittery is a great LYS mostly offering yarns from local producers - though you will see a few staple lines along the wall in the back. There are plenty of notions if you need a set of interchangeable needles (most popular brands), or you are desperate to get your hands on a 50" cable. Plenty of cute stitch markers and things you didn't know you needed. Books too.
All knittery is to the left when you enter the store. Ginger is your girl! And sewing/quilting is on the right. I could see spending hours here if I did both. I don't think it's possible to simply duck in to quickly pick up this or that... there is so much color and many things to catch your (or my) eye.
They do have a winding service and there are several cafes (within a very short block) where you can grab a bite or a sip while you wait. The square is really charming - you can sit there and dream of all the things you'll be knitting up soon.
Parking isn't tricky, you just need to go ahead and park at the public lot - at the corner of Church & Louisiana. You can enter and exit from two sides, there are places to eat and a park you can see from the lot. And I only need to cross the street and turn left to be able to fondle the fibers! Win win! Even on the busiest weekend I've always found a spot...

This is an amazing destination shop. Itās in the heart of downtown McKinney. So, when you build up an appetite with all the yarn, fabric and whatnot fondling, you can walk to wide variety of restaurants. Then you can head back to the shop to sit and knit a spell.
Seriously, this shop is your own little bit of magic. The yarn selection is carefully curated. You want some Hedgehog - Ginger has it. What about some Magpie - she has that, too. Spincycle - yes, please. Anyhoo, you get the general idea.
Then she goes and does the same thing on her fabric/dry goods side of the shop, Every time I walk into the shop, I...
