I can't say anything about the pay for stay shelter side. I was lucky enough to get an apartment at higher ground. Staff are great, a few that aren't very friendly but that's to be expected. It has an institutional like vibe, with reminders everywhere of that fact like the push button showers where you can't control temp and no real kitchen to cook a pizza if you wanted to. Also, no temp control in my unit( not sure if others have one) and no windows that open for ventilation. Oh and I forgot to mention concrete, a lot of concrete. I'm grateful to have a warm place when it's cold out. It's been a somewhat frustrating experience so far, too much to go into here. Overall, it's not the place for me long term and I'm not sure Catholic charities has it figured out yet. I'm thankful for the help with the place but I see how much money they get for me to stay here and it's incredible. I feel for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIt is a shelter, so you should not be expecting the world (even many people staying there do). The staff does its best to find a balance between law and freedom. It is horrible if you are a non-smoker; there is an indoor smoke room next to bathroom. Most people are there to sleep it off, or just not sleep on the train or street. Several obnoxious drunks on a nightly basis. The check-in times are a bit early, but they do serve a dinner, so it is worth it most nights. They also hand out a sandwich and snacks on your way out in the morning. Enough to call it breakfast, so you just gotta find lunch and possibly a snack throughout the day. I recommend finding another place to shower, but they have showers available. No laundry, no...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA great landing place. Staff is mostly kind, considerate, helpful, upbeat and treat folk how they want to be treated, which is an attitude and a chore at times difficult to maintain when dealing with the struggling people who lay their heads to rest here. They do a great job, ill say that.
I've been homeless on and off fifteen years and I've been to countless shelters. I've seen it all. To have a safe place to rest my bones and feed my face as I wait on my housing is a blessing and I'm grateful for higher ground. I'll say it again, it's a great place to land. If you're looking for a safe, clean and overall friendly environment to get yourself together, or maybe volunteer a little time or something, this be...
