Great place to visit most any time of the day and regardless of the weather - sun, fog or in-between. Do dress warmly as it is typically cool and breezy.
The commercial wharf is to the east and takes just a few minutes to take in. You see a mix of commercial and recreational boats.
The Fisherman's Wharf is the main attraction with an assortment of restaurants, candy and gift shops. The area is a bit grungier than other piers ( they've not taken steps to control seagulls and I've never seen staff sweeping or picking up trash, cleaning, etc.) It is safe but be aware of your surroundings.
Oh, and dress warmly. You'll see lots of people shoulders hunched together because they are cold.
