I lived in the Monroe for 2 years and I don't think the quality of the apartments matches the current reviews. To start with the positives, most people in the community are very friendly, and the units are in a great location relative to the green.
Turning to the negatives:
Many residents don’t adhere to the no-smoking policy. I lived on the 9th floor of building 1, and there are several smokers on that floor. The smell would drift into all units and was completely unavoidable. We used to be able to open the hallway window, which slightly alleviated the smell, but that window was bolted shut to prevent opening. I know similar measures were taken on other floors. If you struggle with any breathing-related health issues, I would avoid the Monroe solely for this issue.
The units are old and require extensive maintenance. The washer/dryer combos frequently break, and it took me several weeks to get a new set when mine broke. My HVAC unit also broke, and that also took over a week to replace. My ceiling had a leak (see before and after pictures) during heavy rainstorms, and that also took several weeks to fix. Luckily none of my personal property was damaged by the leak, but the lackadaisical maintenance response is frightening. Even when maintenance finally got around to “fixing” my ceiling, they left it looking horrible. It is easy to see the extensive water damage to my ceiling that maintenance refused to address.
The elevators are awful and frequently break.
Parking is expensive, but the gate of the parking garage is typically open from midnight until ~8am, so you may be able to avoid paying to park or paying for a pass if you leave late at night or early in the morning.
Although there is an Amazon locker, picking up packages is often a disaster. When you receive non-Amazon packages, the leasing agents frequently put your package in the locker, without sending any code to you to access your package. This happened to me multiple times with packages I needed urgently, but I wasn’t able to get them for several days due to being at work when the leasing office is open. Speaking of which, the leasing office often has infrequent hours. This may be due to the multiple management changes while I lived at the Monroe, but it’s still unfortunate for residents. The Monroe also started to use the package room for overflow packages, but they require you to pick up packages within a few days before management disposes of the packages, which is an absurdly short amount of time, especially for those who frequently travel.
The rent increases every year were typically about 10%, which seemed higher than the neighboring communities.
The bathrooms don’t have operable ceiling fans, so they get extremely moldy very quickly.
Although I didn’t personally experience this issue, several residents complained about mice and bugs in their units.
Soundproofing is non-existent.
There is an annual amenity fee even though the amenities are often unusable.
Upon finally moving out, it was extremely difficult to recoup my security deposit. The leasing office made every excuse to not give it to me, and it ultimately took several months to receive it, but I did get it in full. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more legal action in...
Read moreOur move was good, a little disappointed of the move in condition of the rental. Could have been cleaner, paint spots on newly installed floor, dust in all of the closets, never wiped down. Bathroom sink drain clogged because of work being done to prepare. Window screens completely worn out and holes along the bottom of each of them. They need to be replaced before I can open any windows or bugs will come in. The front door is completely dirty and chipped of paint. The kitchen design was new and not thought out as missing cabinet because of remodel so they put up shelves. I realize this is a rental and first time for me, I should have thought this through a bit and looked around for other place a bit more attention to detail. Not a great experience and price is over the top for this small place and based on the issues I had.
Stephanie and Allison were very accommodating but as representatives of "the Monroe" the should ensure the attention to detail is there as they are dealing with the clients. Sorry perhaps my expectations...
Read moreI really enjoyed my time living at The Monroe! The biggest highlight for me was the amazing staff in the leasing office. Stephanie and Allison deserve a special shout-out — they were always so friendly, helpful, and truly went out of their way to make sure any concerns were addressed promptly. Maintenance requests were handled quickly and professionally too, which made living here stress-free.
The location is fantastic — close to Morristown Green and to everything you’d need — and the community overall feels safe and welcoming.
A few minor downsides: parking is unreserved, so it can sometimes be a little tricky, and the courtyard-facing apartments don’t offer much of a view. The gym is functional but could use better lighting and more equipment.
That said, the people here make all the difference, and I’d happily recommend The Monroe to anyone looking for a well-managed, convenient place to live with a truly...
