Updated, 6 month review. I am providing 5 stars for Eddie, who is my absolute favorite. Sheldon and Miguel are also the freaking sweetest. I contemplated staying simply because of them but my overall rating, 3 stars. There were some confusion when I arrived at 461 Dean for the first time after relocating from DC. I assumed that the loading dock was either underground or a designated area. But it's in the front of the building near the entrance which is on a small busy one way street. EVERY one at the front desk, extremely personable and welcoming. They're sure to bring a smile to your face. However, there were some issues with my unit. The major issue, smoking. Though this is a no smoking building some residents obviously don't adhere to that. My unit was constantly wreaking with cigarette smoke. I had to keep the bathroom door closed because the smell was so bad. It came through the vents and under the bathroom sink and I hated it. The residents smoked in the stairwell also. Management encouraged me to notify them whenever it happened. But I was gas lit into thinking I was the only one who experienced the issues. Residents stood right by the entrance while smoking so I was forced to encounter it when entering/exiting the building. They then left cigarette butts near the entrance. Then the plumbing, the bathroom sink and tub stayed clogged. I had to manually remove the water by soaking it up with towels. The move in process prior was seamless. My email and phone interactions with Omar were beyond welcoming. It's already stressful seeking an apartment in NYC especially with a housing subsidy. I've experienced endless discriminatory practices while seeking an apartment due to being a voucher participant. However, Omar along with the assistant manager went beyond in attempt to get me approved. I moved from a one bedroom in Washington DC and leased a studio because of Omar and the many lovely reviews (which were misleading). The units are subpar. However, back to Omar, they made me feel safe, important and welcoming. Unfortunately, the stale cigarette smoke/smell that was ingrained in the unit due to excessive smoking over time supersedes the pleasantries. The endless plumbing issue was also a headach. I complained so much that management allowed me to terminate my lease without penalty. It's so unfortunate because I can tell that the building was once a beautiful place. The location is also phenomenal. But the stress and headache weren't worth it. I'm gonna miss my buddy Eddie that's for sure. But I just couldn't tolerate it any longer and had to vacate 6 months after moving in. I feared that my health would've declined by iinhaling the toxins. So, 3 stars simply for...
Read moreI’ve been a tenant at 461 Dean Apartments for a month now, so can only speak to my experience to date with leasing, move in, and first couple of weeks, but I’m very happy to report that 461 Dean has just about exceeded expectations in all areas so far!
After inspecting about a dozen apartments in the Downtown Brooklyn / Fort Greene / Prospect Heights Area, we landed on 461 Dean as the apartments have a great view, sizeable living areas, a nice quality fitout for the rent paid, and really great connectivity, while still having nice neighborhood bars and restaurants within walking distance (5th Ave, Vanderbilt, Flatbush, etc.). Throughout the leasing process Omar has been great to work with, he’s super responsive and keen to help where he can, thank you!
Since moving in, we continue to be pleasantly surprised by all the positive elements of the building. The wait time for an elevator is never that long, all of the common spaces are well maintained (and smell great), and perhaps best of all, the whole team at 461 Dean have a really friendly and positive vibe, which makes a real difference as a resident.
Appreciate it’s still early days, so if anything changes I’ll update this review. But for now, my sincere thanks to all the team at 461 Dean for making it a great place to live!
P.S. I know this review and some of the others posted may sound a bit forced or fake, but trust me it’s real! I think in NYC it’s easy to set low expectations when it comes to the rental market, so it’s such a pleasant surprise to come across a building...
Read moreWe’ve been living here for a month now and overall, it’s been a good experience. The absolute highlight of this building is the amazing staff. Omar, the leasing agent, made our move-in process smooth and welcoming. Josh and Danny, the handymen, are always super helpful and responsive whenever anything comes up. Andy and Marco at the front desk are consistently friendly and professional, and most of the package room team are great to deal with too. Everyone really works hard to make residents feel at home.
The views from the apartments are also fantastic — definitely one of the major perks of living here.
That said, there are some drawbacks that are worth mentioning. Noise can be a real issue. Movements from upstairs neighbors — heavy footsteps and constant stomping — are very noticeable and can get very annoying. I suspect it’s partially due to the building’s structure and the fact that some spots on our own floor flex a bit underfoot, which probably amplifies sounds from above. We also have neighbors who leave their door open while they cook or smoke and that creates a lot of smell in the hallway and sometimes our apartment if we leave the door open for a couple minutes while taking out the trash. In addition, because of the building’s location near Barclays Center, there’s a fair amount of street noise and event noise and vibrations, especially on busy nights.
The unit itself is perfectly fine, but if you’re sensitive to noise (especially overhead stomping or street noise), you might want to take that into account...
