I felt forced to leave a review during the salon, so I'm here to say what I really think. All of these reviews keep saying this is the "best place for curly hair people" but I just want to ask who exactly are "curly hair people?" I am a young Black woman with 4A hair and I went to go get my hair done by Curlventure yesterday and left feeling unseen, micro-aggressed, and disappointed. I can say that my hair was in a bun for the first couple of the days of the week so it wasn't in the best condition but the way the beautician touched my hair made me feel extremely uncomfortable and sensitive. She didn't ask if she was hurting me when she was pulling apart my strands, and spoke about the products and my hair as if she'd rather do someone else's who was more manageable. And in 2025, curl salons should have better representation and understanding of Black hair—because we are by definition the minority of curly hair. So, throughout this experience, I couldn't help but to feel micro-aggressed and isolated.
The only woman that I felt really paid attention to me was the woman who washed my hair because she continued to ask if I felt relaxed and comfortable. And look, I get it, my hair gets tangled pretty easily so it's "harder" to do, but Black women are a large part of the curly definition, and it feels disappointing when the beautician's doing your hair seemed trained to only take care of "curls" as thick as 3A. Before I left, she didn't even seem like she liked the cut that she gave, saying that it was "a work in progress but when I start using the right products it'll look better."
I asked for recommendations of products to use and she only recommended the in-house products they sold which is not reliable when I can only afford to buy at beauty supply stores (because I am a twenty-three year old who just gave a salon $190). When you leave the salon, your beautician should have went out of their way to make you feel beautiful, not "a work in progress." I was also the last person to leave which made me feel self-conscious.
I ask that Curlventure management hire more hairdressers that represent ALL curly patterns in staff. Ergo, this place is for curly textures of non-BIPOC people, do not come to Curlventure if your...
Read moreRobert has been cutting my hair for 15 years through all eras of my life and evolving style. Bangs. No bangs. Highlights. Touches of color. Pink. Blue. Purple. Long. Short. You name it. He is the King of Curls! I started going to him when I was in high school, when I hated my curly/wavy brown hair...everyone used to cut it straight and it would end up in a big poofy unmanageable mess when I tried to do it myself. After I started going to Robert, I STOPPED CRYING OVER HAIRCUTS! 5 stars - no doubt. More like life-changing.
Sometimes I show Robert a picture of a style I want to try, and he is completely honest about what works or what doesn't. I feel like my haircut is part of my personality, and Robert just understands what is best, and who I am. He's been cutting my family's hair for years too, and he just makes their hair so fun! People have actually stalked my mom out of stores to ask where she's gotten her hair done.
Some favorites about my haircuts are 1. I am able to put some styling gel in my hair and let it air dry OR diffuse it if I want a more polished, curly look. It really doesn't take me much time at all! 2. I don't know how he does it, but my hair grows out perfectly, like the cut actually gets better over time! I have literally had people tell me they loved my hair ON MY WAY to getting it cut and colored again! I've been doing natural honey caramel highlights lately, but I'm going to go with some fun pink for the summer soon! I trust him with anything.
Lastly, I have tried MANY salons in both NYC and NJ for getting a simple bang trim, and I have found only 2 other people besides Robert who can cut them the way I like. The way Robert cuts into curls and cuts bangs is truly an art and is actually mesmerizing to watch.
Finally - about the salon: Last time I went, it took me only 16 minutes to drive from Secaucus to Curlventure Hair salon. If the world opens back up and there's more traffic, I'll just take the bus to Port Authority. It's right across the street! Once I was there, it was so cute and clean! It's like a little oasis escape from the city. I loved all the plants and the greenery, and am looking forward...
Read moreLove this place! So I’m the type of person who has impulsive decisions and like to dye my hair and cut my hair randomly with anyone or anywhere. It was until I started to see that I messed up my hair in the process of my impulsiveness to the point where my hair was NOT curling anymore. My waves hates me and my hair was so dry. I basically looked like a Barbie doll whose hair was destroyed by a kid. I did my research and stumbled upon curlventure. I never really done a curly cut before because I didn’t think wavy hair was considered part of the curl family but I was definitely wrong. I did a wavy and 7 light treatment because my hair was screaming for it. And boy did it work wonders!!!!!! My hair is back to its natural healthy state.and my waves are actually wavinggggg. Gosh! Both Gin and Mariya are wonderful! Mariya really did a number on my hair last Thursday and I’ll always be grateful for the miracle she performed. Also the vibes and atmosphere is very dope! Everyone is so freaking friendly and fun to be with. Highly recommend this place!! Thank you Robert for making everyone feel welcomed especially since I came in with straight hair because that’s how badly damaged my hair was. I wish I had a proper before picture but here’s to show yall. And no you don’t have to cut your hair short, I just so happened to have a bad haircut from someone who didn’t know how to do waves. We just fixed it up to make it even :)))
Btw no I didn’t straighten my hair in that pic It was...
