This is a long review based on my 3 years of treatment experience. I have nothing but the best to say about Dr. Hu and his office. My review consists of several components, and hopefully some prospect patient will benefit from the depth and coverage of my writing.
Doctor Technical Skill
This doctor is of stellar pedigree in terms of training and practice. He also possesses some of the most cutting edge treatment techniques on the market. More importantly, he has EXTENSIVE accomplishments in a vast variety of orthodontic cases, many of them being border-line surgical, that were cured to perfection under his treatment.
In my case, I had class-II overbite with slight open bite and gummy smile. Before meeting Dr. Hu, I consulted with a Harvard-trained orthodontist based in Connecticut. He diagnosed that my chin was also recessed by 2mm and in order to correct that, I would need to undergo orthognathic surgery. For a full adult, he said, orthodontic work alone wouldn’t correct the bone structure imperfection however slight it is.
I did not wish to undergo the knife routine, but also couldn’t give up the idea of achieving perfection. Fast forward to when I found Dr. Hu’s practice.
Dr. Hu successfully utilized TAD (Temporary Anchor Device) to solve all the afore-mentioned issues, WITHOUT extracting any pre-molar. This technique is so advanced that when I went to several other dentists for routine cleaning, all the doctors were struck with great curiosity and kept showcasing my mouth to their fellow associates.
Result vs. Expectation:
Dr. Hu helped me achieve a fully functional, stable and esthetic occlusion (and facial outline). I couldn't have asked for more. I am in the very final stage of braces, and I am constantly blown away by my own results.
Chair-side Manner:
Super easygoing, felt like a family member. He would chat with me about his career, his view of current US health care system, etc. He also patiently answered my questions on each step of the treatment - why he was doing certain procedures, how they fit in the progress of treatment, and what’s the outcome each step of the way. Never rushed, always taking time.
Treatment Comfort:
There was NO pain during any procedure! None, Zero, Nada! You are taking this message from someone who had 8 freaking nails put in her oral bones!
In-between visit soreness: On a scale of 1-10, it’s mostly 0 and sometimes 1 when trying to bite on hard items. Thanks to Damon braces, I didn’t feel any surge of force exertion during the first few days of every adjustment, but rather, getting a gentle and even pulling effect that went mostly unnoticed.
Irritation: minimal, but nothing a bit of dental wax couldn’t help, nor did I develop ulcers because of the wires. Remember, the plastic and metal components physically exist in your mouth, so your buccal tissue will rub against them, and depending on your malocclusion/protrusion severity, the sense of traction will vary.
Scheduling:
Always easy and smooth. Never had a problem setting up appointment during any office day. There are a lot of patients of course, but Dr. Hu works extra hard and overtime to accommodate everyone’s visit.
Dr. Hu even did an emergency fix to my braces (self-inflicted trouble) during his off day. No extra charge, he did it only because he deeply cared about his patients.
Fees:
Fees are on par with market price, but the treatment quality and service attention one gets, is beyond phenomenal. It’s like getting an Ivy-level education on state-school fees. This is truly how good a deal I felt I was getting out of the whole experience.
I’m not here to advocate elitism, but had he not come to the US, ordinary folks like us would never have such a readily and affordable access to his extraordinary skills and care, because these would probably be reserved for the very rich and influential class in China.
Above all, I highly recommend this doctor to all people seeking orthodontics work. His practice is a true diamond that shines through an unassuming office, and his work is nothing...
Read moreDr. Lin Hu is hands down one of the best orthodontists you will find in New York City. I had a rare and special case regarding my teeth. Initially, I only wanted to straighten my teeth because I was annoyed by how crooked they were. I went to see an orthodontist through my insurance, and she did an x-ray. It turned out that my left canine tooth was still stuck in the bone and never erupted through my gums. Because of one missing teeth, all my upper teeth shifted to the left to take its place. That orthodontist told me that in order to correct this and make that tooth come out, I first had to extract FOUR teeth to make space for ONE tooth. I did not want to go through with this. It was not worth the hassle to me just to get straight teeth. However, just before I left her office, she threatened that this was a serious case and that I better do it or else I will get cancer as an adult. My parents did not want me to go through with it either for aesthetic reasons. They think that when you extract teeth, your entire jawline changes to become narrow. That is fine at first, but as you age, you begin losing bone density in your skull and it makes your face look overly gaunt and unhealthy. I agree with them.
After calling several other orthodontists for second opinions, we found Dr. Lin Hu. He was willing to take on my case and said he could do it without extracting any teeth. He said it would take approximately four to five years with visits every two weeks. Dr. Lin Hu was meticulous--he took his time with everything he did and made sure that I always followed his instructions on keeping my teeth clean all the time and on avoiding foods that would cause my brackets to fall off. He also made sure that I extracted all my wisdom teeth while they were still in my gums because he did not want to risk my teeth getting crooked again later on in my life. Anyway, he slowly created the space that was needed in my mouth. After two years, my left canine tooth finally erupted and we were all excited! He finished my entire case in only two and a half years, which was much earlier than expected. He also did a fantastic job by aligning my jaw properly and correcting my overbite.
It has been six years since my braces were removed. To this day, my teeth are still straight, except for that same canine tooth that began twisting slightly a few weeks ago. I had to go back for new retainers. I am surprised my teeth are still this straight despite not wearing my retainers as often as I should (once a month sometimes). I was lucky with that--you should wear your retainers three times per week for the rest of your life.
People tell me all the time that they love my smile and it is the most attractive quality they notice first. Direct eye contact and a beautiful smile has served me well in my professional life so far because I look friendly and approachable. It has made it easy for me to network with the right people. I also want to be a professional public speaker one day and that is a career where physical appearances for women definitely matter.

Read moreMy own experience of doing braces in Dr. Lin Hu’s practice was a great one: very professional, low-stress, gentle and competent. A lot of my friends asked me if I had cosmetic surgery recently, but actually I was only having braces at Dr. Hu’s office. I really like to share my experience with people who want to do orthodontic treatment.
By nature, to be attractive is very important to girls. I had not have any braces until I was an adult because when I was a teenager, my friends’ orthodontic experience did not impress me and I did not like what they looked like after braces.
Three years ago, I was referred to Dr. Lin Hu by my friends. I was told a lot of great things about Dr. Hu before I came to see him. Dr. Hu and his staff at Flushing Orthodontics provided excellent advice on selecting the most suitable orthodontic treatment for my needs. I am now glad to say that I made a good decision to have Dr. Hu as my doctor. Dr. Hu is very talented orthodontist who cares about his patients and was always open to answer any questions that I had about my treatment. His practice uses state-of-the art innovative orthodontic technologies. Everyone at his office was very professional, super nice and ready to help. Even now I am ready to take off my braces, Dr. Hu is still doing the final detail to make it perfect. I am very pleased with the results of the treatment!
Dr. Hu is a great orthodontist and I would highly recommend his practice without...
