Fox and Jane Salon — Local services in New York

Gave Fox and Jane a try twice, both times feeling optimistic because of the great reviews. Unfortunately, the service I received both times was subpar and I will not be returning.

The first time I visited this location, Silvia did a good job cutting my hair and actually fixed a bad haircut I had gotten at a different salon. However, my hair was dyed pink at the time by a colorist at another salon that I’ve been seeing for years. The entire time Silvia was cutting my hair, she was criticizing my color, pointing out parts that she thought were patchy, where it should’ve been re-glossed, etc. and insisting that she could’ve done a better job coloring it. I understand that part of a stylist’s job is upselling, but I was uncomfortable. I was there for a cut and not a consult on my color and frankly, Silvia herself was not even listed as a colorist on the Fox and Jane website at the time (I checked after the appointment). She then pressured me to make an appointment to come back and get my color “fixed” by her, which I promptly cancelled two days later.

I waited over a year and until I was desperate for another haircut to come back. This time my stylist was Xenia. She spent a lot of time cutting my hair; however, it did not turn out how I wanted at all. I’d asked for just above my shoulders and even shown her a photo of myself with hair at that length and she cut it to slightly above chin length. I also clearly described at the start of the appointment that one side should be a tiny bit longer than the other side (an angled effect), but she cut the wrong side shorter and it looked awkward with my part. She then had to take off more length to fix it once I pointed it out. She charged me $110 for an advanced cut whereas the website and my appointment showed the price for medium / long cuts as $94. I understand she took longer to cut my hair and I requested adjustments as she was cutting, but that was due to an error she made.

Based on the many good reviews, I’m sure there are great stylists at Fox and Jane too! Unfortunately, I’ve been really disappointed both times I visited and definitely...

Alas, I’ve waited years to write this review and I wish it could be more positive but the last couple of times I’ve visited and taken a chance with a new stylist, my results have been subpar. I’m not in the business of throwing people under the bus, so I won’t specifically name the two stylists that cut my hair recently, but overall I have found that the quality of your service will depend heavily on the stylist you choose. To begin, I’ve been visiting F&J since 2014, when I’d found my first and favorite stylist almost a decade ago. I left Brooklyn for a couple of years and returned in 2020 but of course my original stylist had moved on. Trusting that F&J only hires quality staff, I booked an appointment with someone new. My haircut was lackluster and I felt that my comments were not really understood. After this, I waited nearly a year and gave another stylist a shot. I’d asked for an asymmetric reverse lob and provided photos, but what I ended up with was mostly just a crooked and uneven looking slanted shoulder length cut. The layers and texture are fine but the shape just wasn’t working for me. Additionally the stylist I worked with made me rather uncomfortable, snapping at me to never tilt my head towards her while she cut and also pushing back when I asked her about trimming some hair around my face to create long layered side-swept bangs. I felt pressured to just be polite and quit asking for mods because honestly I just wanted to leave.

My hair looks sort of weird now and I don’t like how it’s growing out, but my hair grows quick and I’m now back to waiting for another stylist friend of mine to work on my hair whenever she’s back in town, because I can communicate to her what I’m looking for without the awkward pushback. Unfortunately I think my relationship with F&J has come to an end. I think there are many talented folks here, but it really is luck...

BEST EXPERIENCE EVER!! I had been looking for somewhere to do creative color for a while now and my boss recommended Fox & Jane on Atlantic since she loves it. I wasn't sure if they would be able to do a more crazy, whacky service like dying my hair pink but I set up a consultation with manager Nicole to discuss.

And WOW. She was confident, informative and fun and outlined exactly what to expect. As someone who has had blue hair in the past, I knew what I was getting myself into but she explained everything just to be sure, which I really appreciated.

When I arrived for my appointment I was greeted by the amazing staff and Nicole began what I can only describe as...hair MAGIC. She worked tirelessly for 6 HOURS along with her incredible staff to literally perfect my vision. Seriously... she put over 140 foils in my hair, and they were PERFECT. Alyssa and Deeana (not sure on spelling) were absolutely unstoppable and worked harder than any salon staff I have ever seen. We literally had a dance party during my hair washing session.

To top it all off, Nicole used an amazing lighting set up to take some pretty epic pictures of my new hair and made sure I got all of them right then. She even mixed the color she used into my conditioner for me to take home along with the remaining tube of color.

I truly can't say enough about this salon and everyone who works there. I literally spent 6 hours there and got beyond incredible service and a really fun time!! I started with hot tea and ended the day with a glass of wine and my favorite hair transformation to date.
